December 7, 2006 'The Doors' movie screening
Oliver Stone, Val Kilmer and Kyle MacLachlan were on hand last night for the screening of "The Doors" at the Mann's Chinese 6 Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. Kathleen Quinlan was also supposed to appear but had to cancel due to a personal matter. Attendees got small black & white Doors buttons/badges, and there were also free Tribaljazz postcards and posters on the check-in table. As I stood in line waiting to get admitted into the theater, I saw Robby walk through the lobby accompanied by The Doors management Jeff Jampol and Cory Lashever. Robby was there before the screening started and was in the 'green room' doing press. I was escorted there before the screening began so I could see Robby (thank you, Gordon!). Kyle was in there relaxing, as well. The 7:30 screening was postponed about 30 minutes due to Val Kilmer's late arrival due to traffic. The premiere of Leonardo DiCaprio's "Blood Diamond" movie next door at Graumanns Chinese Theater had Hollywood Boulevard traffic in the vicinity tangled more than usual. Robby left when it was nearing time for the event to begin. Inside the theater, Gordon Meyer from Storymakers Studio introduced Val and Kyle, who then went up into the audience to watch the movie with the rest of us. The screening was the original theater release, and did not contain any of the deleted scenes or extras that are part of the 15th Anniversary Edition DVD that gets released next Tuesday, December 12th. Historical inaccuracies aside, it was great to see Val's performance on a big screen and to hear the music on that kind of sound system. I sat with friends Larry, Beverly, Linda, and David my son ... and we all applauded when we saw Robby's quick walk-through in a scene that so many people have never even noticed. When the screening ended, John Densmore and Oliver Stone were introduced and emerged from the rear of the audience. They joined Val and Kyle at the front for questions from Gordon Meyer. Gordon also asked questions that had been turned in on cards passed out to audience members before the movie began; the people whose questions were used were given a Doors Greatest Hits CD. Some of the discussions dealt with Oliver's working methods, filming of the live concert sequences, Val's inhabiting of the role and the use of his own vocals, Bill Graham's involvement in getting buy-in from the Morrison and Courson families and Ray, Paul Rothchild's contributions, comparisons of working with Oliver -vs- working with other directors, and much more. Since the Q&A was being filmed for a later Pay Per View broadcast, I don't want to reveal too much detail. Val did say that when the shooting wrapped, Paul Rothchild gave him a gift of one of his copies of Jim's "An American Prayer" poetry book. Gordon introduced Paul Rothchild's son, who was seated a few rows behind us in the audience. Gordon mentioned John's recent Tribaljazz release. As the evening ended, John said he had brought a taste of Jim's poetry as he unwrapped his hand drum. Val held the mike for John as he quoted some of Jim's poetry from 'An American Prayer'. A few quick fans were lucky enough to catch Oliver, John and Kyle for an autograph before they disappeared from the auditorium. It was apparent that Val was having a private after-party, as he had his own guest list at the check-in area. Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top was one of the unmistakable arrivals. Val seemed anxious to get on with his own party and mentioned it several times as the Q&A wound down. My son and I ended up getting onto the same elevator as Val going to the parking garage. To my son's chagrin and astonishment, I was totally clueless and didn't even notice Val in the elevator car! Oh well ....

Robby Krieger is one of the guest musicians who will perform at An All-Star Tribute to San Francisco Music, Past and Future, a private music industry concert tomorrow night in San Francisco. The private concert is to raise funds for Bay Area music education and musician disaster relief. Robby and other musicians such as Scott Weiland, Stephan Jenkins, Steve Jones and Mark McGrath will be offering their own renditions of hits by Bay Area artists for this charitable cause. August 22, 2006 Bruce Gary R.I.P.
Sad news again in the world of music. Drummer Bruce Gary passed away earlier today. Bruce is perhaps best known as the drummer for The Knack, but Bruce and Robby were long-time collaborators. You can find Bruce Gary credited on Robby's solo releases such as Robby Krieger & Friends; Versions; Robby Krieger (Cafe Records); Door Jams; No Habla, and Cinematix. I may even have missed one or two! www.brucegary.com I once had the honor of being introduced to Bruce by a mutual friend following a Bob Dylan club show in Hollywood. He seemed to know everyone, but was sweet and friendly enough to stand there and discuss his work with Robby with me. He then blew me away when he told me that from there, he was heading directly to Robby's house to work on some music (it was already 11:30pm or later). R.I.P. Bruce, and thank you for being such a big part of Robby history. (thanks, Phil)

Robby Krieger's artwork is included in a free rock art exhibit this weekend at the Westlake Center, 400 Pine Street in Seattle sponsored by 95.7 KJR-FM. Other rock artists whose works will be showcased include McCartney, Dylan, Bowie, Hendrix, to name just a few. Also featured will be works from famous rock photographs including Henry Diltz. August 6, 2006 Robby guest performer last night
Robby Krieger was one of the guest performers at last night's X-Games private event at the L.A. House of Blues. Camp Freddy was the entertainment, but then they were joined by an astounding parade of vocalists and guitarists. Of course, my hands-down favorite was Robby and Scott Weiland performing 'Roadhouse Blues' with Camp Freddy. The other guest performers (in no particular order) were Steve Jones of Sex Pistols; Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray; Billy Duffy of The Cult; Slash of Velvet Revolver; two guys from Cypress Hill; Steve Isaacs from the Panic Channel; and a few others I didn't know. All the songs performed were covers of well known songs. Pictures will be uploaded later today.

July 27, 2006 new Robby audio

Included are two songs from his appearance with Particle at the recent Joshua Tree Festival in the California desert in mid-May. There are the two songs from his appearance a week later with Uli Jon Roth and friends at UCLA's MacGowan Hall on May 27th that I was lucky enough to attend. That show featured Evan Marshall on vocals and Dave Waterbury on bass. There are also some tracks from Robby's personal archives with the RKO and RKB bands. Prior to the performance, Constantine gave an introductory speech that expressed great respect and admiration for Robby, adding that he was honored to be singing with the man who wrote the songs that inspired him to become a vocalist! June 25, 2006 Robby is golfing for charity tomorrow
Robby Krieger is confirmed as a participant in tomorrow's charity golf event at the Jack Nicklaus Ruby Hill Golf Club in Pleasanton, California benefiting the Jeremy Brigham "Make A Difference Foundation." According to the information at the following link, it looks like Robby is part of the entertainment, too. Someone named Constantine Maroulis from American Idol is apparently a huge Doors fan, has been known to perform a Doors cover song or two live in concert, and is also pictured as one of the entertainers ... so that pairing looks inevitable! June 5, 2006 Robby on Particle DVD release <> Robby on another Pink Floyd tribute <> Robby the golfer
Robby Krieger appears on an upcoming DVD release from Particle, called 'Transformations-Live.' The performance is from February of this year, when he joined Particle at their show at the Fonda Music Box in Hollywood for a jam on one of their songs, and then "L. A. Woman." According to Amazon.com, the release date is July 18th.

In more Robby news, he appears on another Pink Floyd tribute CD called "Return to the Dark Side of the Moon: A Tribute to Pink Floyd." It was released on May 16 on the Cleopatra label. This is not to be confused with the other Pink Floyd tribute "The Wall" that came out last September, also from Cleopatra. (thanks, George)

One more Robby story: last year he participated in a charity golf event at the Jack Nicklaus Ruby Hill Golf Club in Pleasanton, California benefiting the Jeremy Brigham "Make A Difference Foundation." May 28, 2006 Robby guest performer last night
Robby Krieger was a guest performer last night at MacGowan Hall on the UCLA campus. This was the last of 3 nights of Uli Jon Roth & Friends shows in the Ralph Freud Theater. There was a long list of guest performers who I had never heard of ... but that was okay, my friend Beverly and I were there to see Robby. The other musicians were very good and the rest of the audience in the small 600-seat theater certainly knew who they were and knew the songs. Nevertheless, when Robby was announced and took the stage at 9:25, it was the first time all evening that a huge section of the audience rose to their feet to cheer. Besides Uli Jon Roth and the musicians he was playing with, Robby was accompanied by Dave Waterbury of Spirit on bass, and a vocalist who Robby introduced as Evan Marshall. Their 30-minute set started with 'Riders On The Storm,' then 'Roadhouse Blues' with an audience sing-along, and finally, 'L.A. Woman.' The audience was on their feet again cheering Robby when his set ended. We managed to catch him at the stage door during intermission for a conversation. Since there was not going to be an all-star finale, Robby was preparing to leave and so did we!

May 26, 2006 Robby guest performer tomorrow night <> Robby with Particle last weekend
Robby Krieger will be a guest performer tomorrow night at UCLA's Ralph Freud Theater (MacGowan Hall). It's the last night of an event called the Sky Academy Concerts with Uli Jon Roth & Friends. The concert will be at least 3 hours long and include an intermission (phew). Some of the other guest musicians slated to appear tonight and tomorrow night are from bands such as Megadeth, Ratt, Spirit, Alice Cooper, Heart, Kiss, The Firm, Scorpions, and more. (thanks, Dawg)

May 25, 2006 Robby talks to his fans
Robby Krieger answered some questions from fans on his Forum last night. In one reply he stated that he is currently working on a new project loosely based on "Sketches of Spain" by Miles Davis, with Art Barrow co-producing. Robby mentioned the songs that Riders On The Storm have recorded, but indicated that they would have to wait to see what happens with the lawsuit before they finish it. My personal favorite post by Robby was in response to a fan who asked Robby why he hasn't written a biography. Robby's priceless reply was: "I don't want to get into trouble. I think I'll wait 'till everyone dies!" Hopefully Robby will begin to visit his Forum on a regular basis and talk to the fans. April 22, 2006 Robby's absence from Barcelona show
Robby Krieger was absent from the Barcelona, Spain show last night (Friday night), which was also the last date on the Riders On The Storm European tour. I have been contacted by the band's manager, Tom Vitorino, and asked to assure concerned fans everywhere that it was simply a bad case of food poisoning that took Robby out of action and put him in the hospital. While the rest of the band flew home from Europe today, Tom stayed over an extra day with Robby, and they will travel home to L.A. on Sunday. The band's long-time soundman Bob Carsten was called upon to pinch-hit for Robby at the Barcelona show. (thanks, Tom V and Dave D)

March 15, 2006 long-lost Robby project <> on-line photos of band
|Robby Krieger apparently began an audio project in the mid-1980's known as "A Cat's Tale." It is believed that the audio story that was going to be made into a cartoon, but was never completed. The voices of Robby and his wife Lynn are used for the characters. A copy of this 30-minute tape has just surfaced from a collector. If you have any additional information about this project to share with the person in possession of this recording, please send it along and I'll get it to the tape's owner, who hopes to be able to gain permission to share some clips of it.

March 11, 2006 Robby quoted regarding new Riders songs
Robby Krieger is quoted in today's The Sunday Times - Ireland with some exciting news, especially for the fans who will attend the Riders On The Storm concert in Dublin on April 11th: "In a year in which the Eagles, the Who and the Rolling Stones are set to play Ireland, perhaps it is only fitting that the current incarnation of the Doors are planning to use an Irish date to test their first material for more than three decades. The last time the band recorded new material was in 1972, a year after Jim Morrison, the band’s iconic frontman, was found dead, at the age of 27, in a bathtub in Paris. Now, 34 years on, Robby Krieger, the guitarist, has revealed he has recorded five new songs with fellow original member Ray Manzarek, the organist. Providing the vocals in place of Morrison is Ian Astbury, former lead singer with British band the Cult. Krieger says he will try out the new material when he performs at the RDS in Dublin next month, along with classic hits such as Light My Fire."

February 25, 2006 Robby guest appearance with Particle
Robby Krieger was one of the special guests last night at the Fonda Music Box Theater in Hollywood, appearing with the jam-band Particle. The show was being filmed for a forthcoming DVD. The ground floor is all standing and upstairs is open seating. I moved upstairs when it was almost time for Robby to join Particle onstage, about 45 minutes into their set. Robby joined the band onstage without an introduction, but was wearing a shirt with DOORS written vertically on the front and back, along with Jim's face. The first number with Robby was an instrumental (as they almost all are) Particle song, possibly called Metropolis. When the band next began playing L. A. Woman, the crowd on the floor below went wild with appreciation and recognition, and the fans seated in the balcony rose to their feet to dance. One of the Particle guitarists did the singing. I don't know if Robby was going to stick around to join the band for the encore, which was estimated to be about 1:00 or 1:15 a.m. ... but I did not stick around for that..
