date of "The Doors - Total Rock Review", an unauthorized DVD.
The blurb says: "This
is the ultimate critical review of the Doors, on record, on film and live on
stage. Drawing on rare film and television archive material, this
independent and highly authoritative review revisits every single Doors album
and critically reassesses the work of this legendary band from the '67 debut
album right through to the seminal L.A. Woman. A leading team of music
critics, musicologists and working musicians considers vintage performances by
the Doors and traces the secrets of the band's success. This hard hitting
powerful film makes no concessions to labels, artists or management and pulls
no punches when it comes to deciding what made the music work and, sometimes,
why it didn't. Approx. running time 116 minutes. This film is
unauthorized and is not associated with or approved in any way by The Doors or
the management of the group." The DVD cover
artwork is a photo of Jim from the Aquarius Theater 1969 and can be seen

~~
hardcover release date of
"Laurel Canyon: The Inside
Story of Rock-and-Roll's Legendary Neighborhood" from Michael Walker
(from Farrar Straus and Giroux.) According to the L.A. Times write-up on
April 2, the book chronicles the canyon's decadent musical menagerie as it came
to be defined by the rock royalty that lived there -- members of the Doors, the
Byrds, the Mamas & the Papas, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Frank Zappa and
Joni Mitchell, among many others. The author is himself a Laurel
Canyon dweller, and is quoted: "Two dozen of the baby boom
generation's signature artists were neighbors in a place with a history of
tolerating unapologetic behavior. There was a lot of energy and
creativity. A lot of what turned out to be the 20th century's most
lasting compositions were recorded in Laurel Canyon." The
book's cover artwork is in the style of the old Bill Graham Fillmore and Family
Dog concert posters.
