John news only

On April 6, 2011, John Densmore issued the following statement:  My Dear Fans: This is a hard paragraph for me to write, but necessary. It is about autographs. The last several years I have been so flooded with requests that it is interfering with my personal life, and I am going to have to stop. Fans (or opportunists from ebay) track me when I land at any airport, follow me into the bathroom, and hang around my hotel, looking for my John Henry. It is unfortunate, but I have to draw the line. I will still do the occasional autograph, and of course at any “official” signing I will oblige, but I must say no to the stacks of letters and photos that are sent to me personally, as I must retrieve my privacy. If anyone requests an autograph in the future, they should send the request to The Doors offices, and they will hold them there until we can go through them on a semi-regular basis. Anything else will not be answered. Thanks very much for understanding, jd   http://forum.johndensmore.com/index.php?showtopic=4470

 July 3, 2013      42 years <> John in Syracuse
Jim Morrison's death had a profound effect on me in 1971.  So did Ray's recent death.  Ergo, I'm feeling more pensive this July 3rd than usual.  42 years is a long time; I was a young woman when Jim died, and a senior citizen when Ray died.  It's impossible to ponder Jim on this day without seeing Ray in the same thoughts, so this anniversary commemorates not one, but two losses.  I'm feeling so thankful that we have had these last 42 years of Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger and John Densmore.

John Densmore was in Syracuse, NY last night for a book signing at Sound Garden.  According to this story, John stayed past the planned end time to meet all the fans ... a good PR move after the recent Amoeba Music event that left so many fans S.O.L.  This story also contains a one-minute video and a slide show.  Check it out at:   http://www.syracuse.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2013/07/john_densmore_visits_syracuse.html

 June 25, 2013     reunion concert? <> Tech N9ne
Stories about a reunion concert between Robby and John, possibly at a tribute to Ray, have been all over the place since John mentioned it in a Rolling Stone interview that I shared on June 19th.  Here's another story on CNN.com: http://www.cnn.com/2013/06/24/showbiz/music/the-doors-reunion-tribute-ray-manzarek/index.htmlI'm hearing mixed reactions on this topic.

Hip hop artist Tech N9ne worked with The Doors on 'Strange 13', due for release on July 30th.  This story discusses their influence on him and includes a 5-minute video that shows footage of Tech N9ne visiting Jim's grave, and working with John or Ray & Robby.  Check it out at: http://www.hiphopdx.com/index/news/id.24438/title.tech-n9ne-says-the-doors-saved-my-life-

June 18, 2013      John at Amoeba
John Densmore's
book signing on Friday at Amoeba seems to have been captured (well, 2-1/2 minutes of the two hours) by a videographer standing nearby.  If you were lucky enough to get inside, you may see yourself in line.  Near the end of the video, a friend of John's shows up, at which time John takes a break and they adjourn to the stock room for privacy.  Watch the video at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Zuvb_dqyTw.

 ==================================================

June 16, 2013      John at Amoeba
John Densmore's book signing on Friday evening at Amoeba Music in Hollywood left more than 100 fans very disappointed.  According to a friend who arrived at 5:00 and futilely waited in line for three hours, the Amoeba people advised that John was on a strict two-hour time limit and that he had to leave at 8:00, although they hoped he'd be nice enough to stay longer.  My friend was #240 and was still awaiting his turn at 8:00;  consequently, he did not get to meet John or have anything signed.  Amoeba allowed fans who did not 'make the cut-off' to return the books that were a required purchase for the event.  (thanks, Howard)

June 8, 2013    John on BWTB <> handout at Fingerprints book signing
John Densmore's in-studio guest spot last Sunday morning on the nationally syndicated 'Breakfast With The Beatles' show with Chris Carter on L.A's KLOS 95.5 can be heard at this link: http://beatlesradioshows.tumblr.com/post/52003391968/http-www-divshare-com-direct-24174379-00d-mp3  Unfortunately, you have to listen to most of the show to get to John's segment (unless you are smarter than me and know how to fast forward through this). (thanks, Jim)

At John Densmore's postponed book signing at Fingerprints in Long Beach, CA on June 1, a handout was passed out to the waiting fans with John's thoughts about Ray.  Some fans had John sign the handout. I was out of town and did not attend, but several friends sent me scans of their copies to share here:  John's handout  (thanks, Howard and Beverly)

John Densmore was an in-studio guest yesterday morning on the nationally syndicated 'Breakfast With The Beatles' show with Chris Carter on L.A's KLOS 95.5.  I did not find out about it in time to share here.  John was going to select a few of his fave Beatles songs to play, and give away signed copies of 'Unhinged'.

 May 23, 2013     John interviews
John Densmore was interviewed by Kimball Allen for The Capital Hill Times when he appeared in Seattle last Saturday for an "Unhinged" book signing at Elliot Bay Books.  Read that interview at: http://www.capitolhilltimes.com/2013/05/an-interview-with-the-doors-john-densmore/.  John references his recent appearance on the Jimmy Fallon show in this story.  I understand from fans that the official video of that appearance has now been edited down so that John & Jimmy's brief "Roadhouse Blues" jam has been cut out.  Fans who didn't get to see that full segment before it was edited out should write to the Jimmy Fallon show and ask them to restore the full clip.

John Densmore was interviewed by Gabriel San Roman of OC Weekly about 'Unhinged'.  Read that at: http://blogs.ocweekly.com/heardmentality/2013/05/drummer_john_densmores_new_book.php

 May 22, 2013     John's book signing postponed <> Ray & John 1987
John Densmore has postponed his scheduled book signing appearance at Fingerprints in Long Beach this Saturday.  According to an email from the store:  First, we would like to send our condolences to the family, friends, and all of you who are fans of The Doors, and Ray Manzarek; we join you in your sadness at the passing of one of our heroes. Ray was one of the architects of Rock and Roll, and we will miss his presence, and will celebrate his musical legacy.  Due to Ray's unfortunate and unexpected passing, and at John's request, we're going to push our event back by one week.  Our book-signing event will now be held:  Saturday, June 1st at 2:00pm.  To RSVP for this re-scheduled event, call Fingerprints at 562/433-4996.

Ray Manzarek & John Densmore were interviewed by Paul Iorio in May 1987 in NYC, but apparently the interview was never published.  Mr. Iorio is now sharing it on his Huffington Post blog.  It made me smile to picture Ray and John doing this joint interview; it sounds like they were laughing together and having fun.  Read it at:  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/paul-iorio/a-previously-unpublished-_b_3310149.html  (thanks oodles, Dave)

May 4, 2013      John on Fallon <> Doors artifacts auction results <> Doors vs. Beatles
John Densmore's guest appearance last night on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon was short and sweet.  He was the third guest and came on at 1:23 a.m.  This five-minute spot left scant time for much other than a brief mention of 'Unhinged', along with John's latest favorite line about The Doors coming unhinged a few years back, but that they are now getting back on track.  Instead, they talked about Fallon's impression of Morrison singing 'Reading Rainbow' with John suggesting that Jimmy could handle the vocals if the three of them ever got together for a one-off charity performance.  John then moved to a drum set in front of The Roots to play while Jimmy sang 'Roadhouse Blues' until the commercial break at 1:28 a.m.  Watch the clip here: http://www.latenightwithjimmyfallon.com/video/john-densmore-recalls-meeting-jim-morrison/n36333/

John Densmore revealed at the conclusion of his live streamed interview at Cleveland's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this evening, that when he appears on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on Friday night, he'll also be sitting in with The Roots, the show's house band.  The interview included him reading from 'Riders On The Storm' as well as 'Unhinged'.  He performed the section from his ROTS live show that he toured with in the early 1990's where he introduces the songs on their debut album to his parents.  Following the interview, John took questions from audience members until that wrapped and he went off to meet fans and sign copies of 'Unhinged'.

John Densmore's first stop on his book tour was Saturday in Scarborough, Maine.  Here is a brief news clip featuring John: http://www.wgme.com/news/top-stories/stories/wgme_vid_16506.shtml.  A longer interview (2+ minutes) with him can be seen at: http://wgme.com/news/features/raw-news/stories/vid_4.shtml

John Densmore's sister (wearing a Red Sox hat) showed up at his Saturday book signing.  A friend who was there heard John introduce her thusly to the store owner.  John's sister seemed amazed at the turn-out, which had a line out the door.  Regarding the limited edition hardcover book, the book has a stamp on the inside which says "limited edition ___ of 2500".  As John signed each, he wrote in the sequential number. (thanks, Chris)

This is the day that John Densmore has been waiting many years for.  He began the day with an in-studio interview in NYC with host Jim Kerr on the Q104 'The Jim Kerr Rock 'n Roll Morning Show'  http://www.q1043.com/pages/onair/morning-show/.  I did not get up at 4:00 a.m. west coast time to listen, but I'll try to catch up with it later.  In the meantime, here is a photo of him posing with his radio hosts: http://www.q1043.com/cc-common/mainheadlines2.html?feed=428240&article=11198135

John Densmore's pre-taped interview on today's 'CBS This Morning' can be seen in this 7-minute video:  http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=50145049n

 April 15, 2013   John's kick-off
John Densmore will be highly visible (and audible) as "Unhinged" finally sees its release on Wednesday of this week.  There will be a slew of pre-taped interviews, many with syndicated radio stations, as well as TV appearances over the next few weeks.  It's going to be difficult to catch them all, but I'll share the 'biggies' as I learn of them.  Keep checking the calendar section below for those.  For starters, at 7:00 a.m. or so on Wednesday, John will do a 20 to 30-minute interview with host Jim Kerr on the Q104 'The Jim Kerr Rock 'n Roll Morning Show'  http://www.q1043.com/pages/onair/morning-show/.  Then watch for John to appear in a taped segment on CBS "This Morning" on Wednesday, probably in the 8:00 hour.  The segments are typically available on their website later, so I'll share that link once it appears.  There is also an 8:00 am interview on www.whrwfm.org, previously announced. Keep checking the calendar section on the home page for those and other updates.

 April 12, 2013   John's kick-off <> John radio interview <> Rolling Stone review
John Densmore's Record Store Day kick-off of his 'Unhinged' book tour, starts next Saturday, April 20 at Bull Moose in Scarborough, Maine.  If you are planning to go, here's what you need to know: http://www.wlbz2.com/news/article/239039/51/Bull-Moose-gets-ready-for-Record-Store-Day

John Densmore will be the guest of Doctor B. on Bartlemania on Wednesday, April 17 on WHRW-FM 90.5 at around 8:00 a.m. EDT.  It will stream worldwide at: www.whrwfm.org, and also will be archived later in the day, so you can listen later at: www.bartlespeaks.com.  (thanks, Rich)

John Densmore's "Unhinged" was reviewed in the April 11 issue of Rolling Stone (cover: Jon Hamm): Thirteen years ago, Cadillac offered The Doors $15 million to use their music in an ad; drummer John Densmore opposed the move and ended up battling his former bandmates in court.  At times, this account of the saga reads more like a court transcript than a book, but Densmore's anger is justified.  He's a rare rocker not ruled by greed, though this book might have too much detail for anybody but the hardcores. ** Andy Greene

April 10, 2013   John at R&R Hall of Fame <> John at Uni of Rochester
John Densmore will be interviewed at Cleveland's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum on Wednesday, May 1 at 7:00 p.m.  The Hall of Fame Series interview with John will begin with a reading from 'Unhinged', followed by an interview in front of a live audience, a Q & A, and a book signing.  The event is free with a reservation at: http://tickets.rockhall.com.  See the attached link for ticketing information, which starts April 15th for members: http://rockhall.com/event/HOF-Densmore/

John Densmore will be "In Conversation" at Rochester, New York's Strong Auditorium at the University of Rochester River Campus on Monday, April 22 at 2:00 p.m.   The "In Conversation" series explores the lives of popular recording artists and their creative process.  John's talk will provide a look into the creative and turbulent world of rock music during the late 1960s and early 1970s.  Later in the day (at 5:00) John will do a book signing at Record Archive in Rochester.  The event is open to University faculty, staff, students and - space permitting - the general public.  For more info: http://www.rochester.edu/news/show.php?id=5982

 April 4, 2013   John statement <> 'Unhinged' E-book pre-order
John Densmore released a statement about his book tour to promote the "Unhinged" release: "Thanks to everyone requesting I make a book tour stop in their city (or country). I wish it were possible! I do look forward to seeing those that can make it to the scheduled stops. I will probably add more stops throughout the summer. Also, stay tuned for upcoming media events in the weeks ahead...jd"   So, in other words, there's a chance that John will get to your city this summer after he winds up his first round of the book tour on May 25th in Long Beach, CA.  All dates and venues are listed in the calendar below, as will the media events once they are announced.  Stay tuned!

John Densmore's 'Unhinged' is available for pre-order in the E-book format from Kobo at: http://www.kobobooks.com/ebook/The-Doors-Unhinged/book-HeLNQ3y3lEuBfWru97IUGQ/page1.html

March 30, 2013    John podcast interview
John Densmore will undoubtedly be doing a lot of media in support of the April 17th release of "Unhinged".  For starters, I've received a 28-minute podcast called 'Being Blessed By The Muse" from a website called goingthruvinyl.com.  Check this out at: http://www.goingthruvinyl.com/wp/2013/03/john-densmore-interview-listen-2800-min-%E2%80%93-being-blessed-by-the-muse-s04-ep02/  (thanks, Jason)

March 25, 2013     Record Store Day

The Doors are releasing a 7-inch single for Record Store Day.  It's their studio version of Soul Kitchen on one side, and X's studio version on the other.  For details: https://thedoors.com/news/doors-release-exclusive-7-record-store-day-2013-4373. If you happen to be in the neighborhood of Bull Moose in Portland, Maine on Record Store Day (April 20) ... you could catch a Doors double-header by picking up the single (if they carry it), AND seeing John Densmore kicking off his book signing tour there at 2:00 p.m.  For more info on John's book tour schedule, see the calendar below or his official site at: http://johndensmore.com/  (thanks, Ken)

March 13, 2013      John talks renewables
John Densmore is apparently at SXSW this week, based on this 2-minute video clip of him talking with someone about renewable energy ... check that out at:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0WDL2mB7Wk&feature=share

 March 10, 2013      John's book back cover
The back cover of John Densmore's forthcoming "The Doors: Unhinged"  Jim Morrison's Legacy Goes On Trial book has been shared on Facebook.  You can see what some of John's friends who have already read the book have to say here.

March 7, 2013      John jamming at TRAP auction
John Densmore performed along with Master Percussionist Hani Naser on March 1, 2013.  The event was a sold out private event in Santa Barbara, CA for the The Rhythmic Arts Project (TRAP) auction.  Musicians Eddie Tuduri and Miguelito Leon are also jamming along.  Check it out in this 10-minue clip at:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-TcbYhxEtg

 March 6, 2013     John's "Unhinged" book tour
John Densmore's book signing tour for "The Doors: Unhinged"  Jim Morrison's Legacy Goes On Trial has been updated and the changes made in the calendar below.  In brief, Cambridge, MA replaces the tentative Boston venues, a few event times have been tweaked, and the second event in Seattle has changed from tentative to firm!  It is my understanding that the 2,500 limited edition hardcover books will be available only at these book signing events at the indie stores ... i.e., not through Amazon.  I'm hearing from disappointed fans in other parts of these United States who have been looking forward to not only John's book, but to having the chance to meet him in person.  Hopefully he will decide to expand the itinerary but for now, it looks like this is it.

 ==================================================

 March 5, 2013      'Unhinged' artwork
John Densmore's book cover artwork has experienced a slight transformation.  This is the original cover for "The Doors: Unhinged"  Jim Morrison's Legacy Goes On Trial  that we have been seeing in stories and press releases.  I notice that the banner promoting the book on the home page at  http://johndensmore.com/  now shows the word DOORS with a new look.  It's less logo-y and more L.A. Woman-ish.

 ==================================================

 March 4, 2013      John's booksigning appearances
John Densmore's upcoming book tour which kicks off next month in Maine includes a stop at Music Millennium in Portland, OR on Friday, May 19.  That store is promoting the appearance with the encouragement to pre-order "The Doors: Unhinged" for guaranteed admission to the book signing, which will also get you one of only 2,500 limited edition hardback copies of the book.  It goes on to say that the hardcover version will be available exclusively at indie stores.  At this appearance, John will sign up to two additional items with purchase of the book.  If you are unfamiliar with book signing events, be aware that this is common practice and you should check with whatever indie store John has announced as part of his tour that you plan to attend.  You may need to pre-order the book from that store and possibly RSVP to ensure you can get in.  Here is the full Music Millennium blurb: http://musicmillennium.tuneportals.com/Event/40472.  All announced all dates, times & locations so far are in calendar below.

 February 1, 2013      John clarification
John Densmore has issued a statement on Facebook about the press comments related to the upcoming release of his new book, "The Doors: Unhinged:  Jim Morrison's Legacy Goes On Trial".  John says:  "Recent Google searches said my new book will expose the feud between the band members... may I re-phrase... Yes, it will trace the struggle Jim's estate & I went through to preserve the name The Doors, but at the end will have a healing statement of my caring for my musical brothers...jd "   I am happy to see this clarification.  I have noticed the emphasis in all the stories about the "long simmering feud" and have been concerned about a resurgence of hostilities between fans and more importantly, his musical brothers.

January 12, 2013     Rock Hall induction ceremony
The Doors were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on this date in 1993, with Eddie Vedder doing the induction honors.  As my ever-present Doors karma would mandate, not only was it the only time the ceremony has been held in Los Angeles, but it was also my birthday.  My friend Kathy and I took vacation days from work so that we could arrive early at the Century Plaza Hotel and hang out in the lobby watching the arrivals.   It was raining like a mo-fo all that day and night, but because we arrived early, were dressed like business people instead of fans, and kept low profiles, we managed to get into the hotel and mill around without attracting negative attention from security.  We saw the arrivals of Dick Clark, Phil Spector, Billy Idol, Cher, Jon Bon Jovi, Chris Isaak, John Fogerty, Don Henley, and many others ... but of course, we were focused on the Big Three, who all graciously stopped to sign autographs as they passed through the lobby:  Ray Manzarek  <>  John Densmore  <>  Robby Krieger.   It was an exciting event to be on the fringe of, and possibly the most exciting & memorable birthday EVER.  If I'd had an extra $1500 - $1700 I didn't need, I could have bought a ticket to attend the event in the ballroom downstairs.  There are numerous YouTube videos of the induction and Eddie Vedder performing with the guys, if you've never seen those before.

 January 9, 2013     John's 420 tease
John Densmore has a surprise up his proverbial sleeve.  According to a post on Facebook today:  On April 20th (420), you’ll have another reason to light one up...jd   Well, I'm intrigued.  I have my own theory about what awaits us on that already special date.  I guess we'll have to wait and see.  Let the speculating and anticipation commence!

 December 1, 2012      HB2JD
John Densmore turns 68 today.  He has stayed pretty busy in 2012.  Besides joining Twitter earlier this year (https://twitter.com/johndensmore) John has participated in programs that benefit music in schools, after-school programs, the developmentally disabled, and helped to break a drumming Guinness World Record.  The long-awaited book "Unhinged" is still promised, and recently John announced that he has produced a film version of 'Window Of Opportunity', a stage production that he co-produced in 2006.  Plus Skrillex and the RE:Generation project, and probably lots more that is under my radar.  Best wishes for another busy and successful year to John!

November 18, 2012    John film producer
John Densmore has announced that he is "very proud to have produced a new feature film, 'Window Of Opportunity' - a suspenseful, darkly comic thriller.  The themes in the moves are ones that I've been concerned about for a long time, primarily the corporate greed that has so damaged our country and world, and the CEO's who have been in charge."  He asks that you take a look at the trailer and let me him know what you think ...  (and you can do that through his Facebook page or his website forum).  Here is the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Si16VvCHH4U&feature=youtu.be  (thanks, Jim)  Back in April 2006, John was co-producer of a stage production of this story.  For a refresher on that, this link goes to an L.A. Times story about it.

August 19, 2012      SSMF events - news stories & videos <> BOT wakes up the Mars rover
There are plenty of news stories
and YouTube videos from the weekend.  Following are links to many of them from the Thursday night House of Blues event:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QztDfSkW6Xo  <>  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ELY37IR9kQ&feature=relmfu  <>  http://mavrixonline.com/2012/08/17/doors-honored-sunset-strip-music-festival/  <>   http://www.billboard.com/events/the-doors-light-up-sunset-with-linda-perry-1007858152.story#/events/the-doors-light-up-sunset-with-linda-perry-1007858152.story  <>  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0foK9hcfJlQ  <>  http://www.flickr.com/photos/sleepydoll3/7803958708/   <>  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QSUO77CnpI  <>  http://www.patrika.com/photo.aspx?id=36075  <>  http://www.lamag.com/culturefilesblog/blogentry.aspx?BlogEntryID=10417241

Switching to a non-SSMF topic, apparently 'Break On Through' is one of the songs being played by mission control to 'wake up' the Mars Rover.  Several crew members on the Mars Curiosity Rover Mission answered a bunch of questions on Reddit a few days ago, and one question involved the the rover's "wake-up" songs ... i.e. songs played by mission control to start their day. (It's a Mars rover tradition, apparently).  According to one crew member, the wake-up song list includes the "Mission: Impossible" theme, "Wake Up Little Susie" by Simon and Garfunkel, "Come Fly With Me" by Frank Sinatra ... and the Doors hit classic.  John Densmore told TMZ that "it's the perfect song for an extraterrestrial, because The Doors are basically aliens."  Huh?  Read it at: http://www.tmz.com/2012/08/17/doors-drummer-mars-rover-break-on-through-wake-up-song/

 August 18, 2012      SSMF events
Today is the BIG (and final) day
of the Sunset Strip Music Festival.  I have so many pix to download and sort that I'm a little blotto.  Maybe tomorrow.  I can't even get my write-up about the Thursday night launch party finished.  Anyway ... the all-day festivities begin in a few hours.  The music starts as early as 1:00 on some of the stages, both indoors and outside.  Some of the music will roll on until 1:00 - 2:00 a.m. (I'll be long gone by then!).  According to what has been publicized so far, Ray and Robby will join Black Label Society on the outdoor West Stage during their set between 3:50 to 5:05 p.m.   And of course, they will join headliner Marilyn Manson on that same stage tonight.  MM's set runs from 9:30 to 11:00 p.m.   The Sunset Strip is closed off between Doheny and San Vicente.  Today will either be an exciting & music-filled day, or an exhausting zoo ... depending on your age, stamina and footwear choices.

Last night's festivities featured shows at all the clubs along 'The Strip'.  I don't know if it's true, but I heard that KISS was doing a secret show at the Key Club.  Anyway, Robby ruled the Viper Room with Roadhouse Rebels cohort Rich Robinson.  I missed that show, as I planted myself in a good spot up the street at the Roxy to await Ray's set with X.  Pictures will follow as soon as I can.

Although I can't get my Thursday night write-up done right now, I can share that John Densmore DID show up at the House of Blues but alas, did not partake of the celebration.  There are photos of him on the red carpet with his lady.  He showed up after Ray and Robby were done in that area and had gone inside.  I heard that after posing on the red carpet, he walked into the House of Blues and then walked out another door, but I can't confirm that.  What I can confirm is that there were several fans I spoke to outside in line that night who were specifically hoping to see John and were disappointed by his non-appearance.  I was disappointed, too.  I had hoped that John would at least appear on stage ... even if only on the other side of the stage from his band mates, to join in the acceptance of the Elmer Valentine Award that was presented to the band and to enjoy the tributes and accolades that flowed that night.  This estrangement has spanned ten years (or more).  I am saddened that John continues to opt to miss out on these events that celebrate the legacy that he is an integral part of.  Enough already (IMHO).  End of soapbox.

August 15, 2012     Wed. nite SSMF events
Tomorrow night is the kick-off of the
Sunset Strip Music Festival.  The following story gives the overview of Wednesday night events at the L.A. House of Blues.  In brief:  the red carpet arrivals of Ray, Robby and John are scheduled for 6:00 p.m.   At 8:00 p.m., a program celebrating The Doors will be presented.  At 9:00 p.m. starts a star-studded concert tribute.  Some of the expected luminaries include Jac Holzman, Matt Sorum, Marilyn Manson and Billy Morrison.  Read the full story at: http://www.classichitsandoldies.com/v2/2012/08/15/the-surviving-doors-to-attend-sunset-strip-music-festival-launch-party-on-thursday/.

published in The Nation magazine in 2002 about use of music in commercials was referenced in a story about the late Adam Yauch's will.  Apparently Yauch stipulated that his music could not be used for advertising purposes.  Read the full story at: http://music.yahoo.com/news/beastie-boys-rappers-bars-ad-181533934.html  (thanks, Jim)

 July 31, 2012     John's book update
John Densmore's forthcoming book status
update is this:  John is reading the 'galleys', the last exit before the text is put in cement.  The cover is done, and he's working on the photo inserts and corresponding blurbs which may include never before seen photos.  It's looking too late for a fall release, as PR is set up several months in advance.  John says thanks so much for keeping the faith ... it will be out fairly soon.  (thanks, Jim)

May 18, 2012    John at drumming event
John Densmore, along with Mickey Hart and many other musicians, joined forces earlier today in a successful attempt to break a Guinness World Record for largest percussion ensemble (not drum circle)!  This took place at Cougar Stadium at College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, CA.  According to various stories, approximately 11,000 people showed up for the challenge, which was all hands playing their Remo "sound shape" percussion devices continuously for five minutes.  The current record for largest percussion ensemble is 10,102 set in Hong Kong in 2002.  The Guinness folks have to review all the video and stills, and hope to have an answer sometime next week to verify the new world record.  Here are several stories about this, the first one also has some photos:  http://scvnews.com/?p=31239   and    http://abcnewsradioonline.com/music-news/2012/5/18/the-doors-john-densmore-grateful-deads-mickey-hart-help-lead.html

April 7, 2012   John at record-breaking drum event <> John statement on Iran & bombs
John Densmore has committed to an event
called 'Rock The Rhythm'.  This was just announced, so  John and the other participating celebrities are not yet named on the website or the poster.  It is a free event that happens on Friday, May 18 at Cougar Stadium at College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, CA between 11am and 12 noon.  The poster indicates that 7,200 sixth and seventh graders are going to break a Guinness World Record for drumming.  More info will be provided as the event website is updated:  http://www.rocktherhythm.org/  (thanks, Jim)

John Densmore posted a statement on Facebook this evening about Iran and bombs:  "Military experts say:  Know your adversary. So would it make sense Iran would want a bomb? They are surrounded by countries with bombs. The only way to stop nuclear proliferation is disarmament. We started the arms race and we're the only country who has used the bomb... twice. We need to think about these things. I have Iranian friends and I don't want their country to end up like Iraq. As the Iranian director who won the Oscar for Best Documentary this year said, "we are an old, dignified culture." The U.S. seems to learn about other countries after we bomb them (i.e Vietnamese restaurants and geography). Granted, my Iranian friends say the head of their country is "crazy," but Bush was pretty "crazy" to me. His preemptive policy didn't work. It is interesting that we are intimidated by a small country in the mid-east, when it used to take Russia with lots of bombs, to threaten us. Oh... the reason: OIL.  Why aren't we  on the cutting edge of alternative energy to get off the mid-east mainline? Germany, for example, has 30% of it's energy coming from solar, and they hardly have any sun! I think about these things because I think about several generations down the road, and I care about America."  To follow this post and the dialogue that ensues, go to: http://www.facebook.com/johndensmore1

March 21, 2012     John visits HOLA
John Densmore paid a visit to HOLA
(Heart Of Los Angeles), a service that its website describes as providing free after-school programs to underserved and at-risk youths.  This YouTube video shows John entertaining and interacting with a large audience of kids.  It looks like he also performed excerpts from the 'Riders On The Storm' program that he developed and toured with in the early 90's after his autobiography came out.  This must have just taken place, because the video was uploaded today and only has seven views so far!  Watch the 6-1/2 minute video at:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDw_w3RxhMc.  To learn more about HOLA, go to:  http://heartofla.org/.  (thanks, Jim)

 January 18, 2012     Skrillex <> John interview & appearance
Skrillex cannot be ignored.  (I have been trying).  No apologies, I am not the 'target demographic' for his type of music anyway.  This video that was released for "Breakn' A Sweat" featuring Ray, Robby and John: http://www.vevo.com/watch/skrillex/breakn-a-sweat/USQY51224268  Don't get your hopes up, John was NOT in the studio at the same time that Ray and Robby were.   :=(   I'm unsure if it is the same one I shared a few months ago.  Anyway, if this scene is your cup of tea, Skrillex has a bunch of L.A.-area dates in the near future: http://www.skrillex.com/  (thanks, Ruben)

John Densmore does an interview with the MusicSantaBarbara.com website and talks about an upcoming event.  On February 17, John and actor Edward James Olmos will co-host a benefit for The Rhythmic Arts Project at Lobero Theater in Santa Barbara, CA.  According to the website, the headliner is Robben Ford.  Read the interview at:  http://musicsantabarbara.com/featured/john-densmore.   For more info about the Rhythmic Arts Project, go to: http://traponline.org/    For the Lobero Theater website: http://lobero.com/calendar/index.php?display=event&id=738&returnto=list    (thanks, Jim)
