Russell snaps everyday moments with rock icons

'REAL Moments with Extraordinary People" at the San Francisco Art Exchange puts on display for the first time a collection of more than 60 images of the Beatles, The Rolling Stones and other rock legends photographed by Ethan Russell during the past 30 years.
Russell started snapping rock musicians' photos in 1968 when he was living in London and hoping to become a writer. Within a few years he became one of the most celebrated rock photographers in the world, capturing memorable shots of such icons as Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Led Zeppelin. He photographed the Beatles' "Let It Be" from start to finish and captured the Stones' tours in 1969 and 1972.
Russell also moved into the world of film in 1978, when he directed his first film with Leon Redbone and another with Rickie Lee Jones, plus the last footage of John Lennon in "Woman." He has received several Grammy nominations for his work.
The exhibition will be on view through Dec. 15. The San Francisco Art Exchange is at 458 Geary St., San Francisco.
