ROBBY KRIEGER BAND review

What a great little club this is ... capacity is 225 people, with small tables directly in front of the state;  higher tables & stools behind those, and then standing areas, which included an elevated area at the rear of the room exactly opposite the stage -- which is where I stood.

The band took the stage at 9:45 p.m. to a packed house.   The club owner got onstage to introduce the band, and mentioned that he wanted to give special thanks to a very special guest in the audience who allowed his son to practice his instrument in the garage ... and then announced that Robby's dad was in the audience.   Mr. Krieger got a rousing round of applause from all of us appreciative fans.

Robby began by mentioning that 'there have been a couple of Doors shows recently', and that bass player Angelo had played with them ...  Angelo thanked Robby for allowing him to be a part of that.    The band launched into Love Me Two Times, followed by Whisky Bar and Back Door Man, all sung by Robby.    Robby was wearing light pants and a bright orange t-shirt that said University on the back.

Five To One was next, with vocals by Angelo Barbera  ... he infused it with a very menacing texture and attitude!     The instrumental Snake Oil followed, and then Not To Touch The Earth, again with Angelo doing those honors.

Love Street was the next song, with Steve Bach just absolutely shining on keyboards, especially on the tinkly outro that just sets that song apart!    The instrumental Revelation gave all the musicians a chance to shine, followed by Peace Frog (always a favorite, no matter what part of the country it is).

Robby paused between songs to say that Waylon was busy recording with his own group, thus explaining why he wasn't onstage with them.   Angelo joked that they "double-booked" Waylon.  Robby said that Waylon would be with them for the shows in Florida .

Idolatry followed.   Angelo did an impromptu commercial jingle for Winston cigarettes, and then Angelo sang Changeling, the song that he has been singing with this band for quite awhile.

Robby and Angelo shared a vocal duet on Riders On The Storm, which was a nice effect.   Robby introduced the next song as the biggest hit that The Doors had outside of the USA ... so of course, this was Mosquito.    LOVE IT!!

Next up was Moonlight Drive ... followed by Robby reciting Horse Latitudes, and then straight into Wild Child.

Marco brought out the unique Rick Turner guitar which always signals that most special musical treat for the audience.   Robby began his incredible fingering and plucking of strings for a few minutes while the band waited for their cues, and then they launched into Spanish Caravan.  

The band plunged into L. A. Woman, and then it was 11:20 and the band left the stage.  When they returned for the encore, Robby inquired as to whether his dad and his Aunt Sandy were still there, so that his dad could choose the next song they should do.   Mr. Krieger and Robby's aunt had actually left their table to leave at the same time the band left the stage, so Mr. Krieger did not get to choose the first encore song ... which was Crawling King Snake, belted out by Angelo.

The pace quickened with Misirlou (from Pulp Fiction) showcasing everyone's talents, and they finished with Light My Fire.    A highlight of this performance for me was seeing Angelo and drummer Ty Dennis both playing Angelo's bass ...  Angelo gets up by the drums and Ty starts playing on the strings with his sticks, making for some very interesting sounds.   I saw this at The Downtown in Farmingdale, L.I. back in June  ...  a very unique variation!

It was 11:45 p.m. and the band members took their final bows and disappeared.   The persistent fans who hung around awhile were treated to a re-appearance by Robby, who signed and posed for the dozens of fans who lingered.

Another GREAT show and ALWAYS worth the traveling that is often required, in order to see the Robby Krieger Band play!!
