2010 SCOTT MEDLOCK & ROBBY KRIEGER & FRIENDS CONCERT & GOLF CLASSIC

benefiting the PAT TILLMAN FOUNDATION   http://www.pattillmanfoundation.org/

November 1, 2010   Moorpark Country Club, Moorpark, CA

Monday I was honored to be a 'volunteer' at this 3rd annual event which benefits the Pat Tillman Foundation http://www.pattillmanfoundation.org/.  In addition to greeting all the participants (which included actors, musicians, and other celebrities) as they passed through the check-in process, I later got lots of sunshine and fresh air working at the Mercedes-Benz hole-in-one green.  No one shot a hole-in-one, so the four prizes of Mercedes did not get driven home by winners.

The icing on the cake of this volunteer stint was being able to attend the Robby Krieger Concert (photo) that evening, which followed an auction for the many generous donated prizes to benefit the Foundation.  One of the prizes auctioned off was a day of golf for three with Robby at Riviera Country Club (photo).

The concert was on a stage erected near the clubhouse facing a natural amphitheater (photo), and was book-ended by two nice large video screens.  After an introduction by sports artist http://www.scottmedlock.com/  and event co-founder Scott Medlock (photo), the concert  began at 7:00 with a set from Gary Mule Deer, who had golfed earlier in the day.  I'd never seen him before; he's a funny guy!

At 7:20 Robby joined Gary Mule Deer on 'Folsom Prison Blues' (photo) with Owen Goldman on drums, Phil Chen on bass, and Kit Potamkin of Wild Child on keyboards (photo).

Gary Mule Deer exited and Dave Brock of Wild Child took over the microphone with Phil and Kit, and Ty Dennis took over the drum seat for 'Break On Through' (photo)  (photo)  (photo).

Next was 'Back Door Man' with the bassist from Little Feat (don't know his name) replacing Phil.

I should mention that there were two fellows on horns ... I could not see them well, but there was at least a trumpet.  I think one is Sal Marquez, who has played with Robby before.

'When The Music's Over' followed with Phil Chen back on bass, and Dave Brock, Kit Potamkin and Ty Dennis still on stage with Robby.  Then 'Waiting For The Sun' ... and then, because there were horns on stage, a fantastic 'Wishful Sinful'.  That was a real treat, a terrific triple-play! (photo)  (photo)

A few personnel changes again:  Adrian Young of No Doubt replaced Ty Dennis on drums, and Evan Marshall replaced Dave Brock at the mic for 'Peace Frog' and 'Love Her Madly.' (photo)  (photo)

Adrian Young left the drums, Owen Goldman took over.  Evan Marshall was still doing the singing for 'Touch Me.'

Musical chairs on stage again:  Steve Molitz of Particle replaced Kit Potamkin on keyboards; Tommy Thayer of Kiss joined on guitar; Nick Simmons, son of Gene (who was in front of the stage watching the show) replaced Evan on the microphone; and a harmonica player all joined in for a rollicking 'Roadhouse Blues'.  That Simmons kid can really sing! (photo)  (photo)  (photo)  (photo)

Steve Molitz, Tommy Thayer, and Owen Goldman stayed put on keyboards, guitar, and drums.  Nick Simmons was still at the mic; Phil Chen was replaced on bass by Gene Simmons for 'Been Down So Long'. (photo)  (photo)

With Gene Simmons and Tommy Thayer still on stage, some new faces:  Danny Seraphine of Chicago on drums, and Mark ?? on guitar.  Phil Chen was back.  Robby sat this one out, standing on the side of the stage while this line-up tore into 'Rock & Roll All Night', with Nick Simmons singing.  Owen was on the side of the stage by the horn players, singing along & hand-clapping! (photo)  I should mention that back in that corner was an artist doing evolving painting.  I forget his name, but he has performed behind Robby several other times including May 2009 at L.A.'s The Mint when Robby and the Willie Waldman Project played.  Pretty interesting stuff!

Everyone took a breather after that while some fine looking guitars were auctioned off:

> a white Alice Cooper signed guitar, also signed by Robby:  (photo)

> a black guitar signed by the Les Paul Band and The Rascals:  (photo)

> a pink guitar signed by Spanky & Our Gang:  (photo)

> a stars & stripes guitar from Robby (matched his pants!): (photo)

> a red & gold Les Paul guitar signed by Les Paul, along with a guitar lesson from Robby: sold for $6,500 (photo)

The show resumed with Ty Dennis, Phil Chen, Kit Potamkin, Dave Brock and Robby for an amazing 'Not To Touch The Earth'. (photo)

That line-up remained for the last song, 'Light My Fire'.  (photo) All I can say about that 10-minute performance, is that Robby was on fire!  ON FIRE!!!   A recording of that is now on YouTube at:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtO-R9L7DZ4

When the concert ended and everyone was filing out, Harpo the Clown was standing along the walkway holding a standup promo from the Oliver Stone Doors film. (photo)  LOL   Apparently Harpo was once a staple of the Red Skelton show.  He was handing out postcards of himself posed with several other clowns and Skelton in 1981! (photo)  http://harpotheclown.com/about.html

Since I began writing this re-cap, I have come across several story and photo links:
