Ray Manzarek & Robby Krieger & Riders On The Storm
Napa Valley Opera House, Napa,
California
Saturday, March 21, 2009
The 500-seat theatre is on the second floor of the
Napa Valley Opera House (nvoh.org), a national
historic landmark originally constructed in 1879. There were Doors friends
who had traveled from Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and Canada for this
rare opportunity to see such an intimate performance ... but clearly, most of
the audience were locals who have come to know Ray and Dorothy in their adopted
hometown. This was the second night of an all-too-brief U.S. tour, and
they did not disappoint. The show started at 8:25 to a packed house which
stayed on their feet almost the entire show.
There were many highlights and the second set was jam-packed with them.
Robby kicked off the second set with a solo flamenco performance before the rest
of the band joined him for 'Spanish Caravan.' Next up was 'The Soft Parade' with drum tech Owen Goldman
joining Ty Dennis on the drum riser to double up on the heavy percussion ... and just when
we thought the song ended, they reprised it ... it was terrific! Then we
were surprised with the beautiful 'Wishful, Sinful' which they played for the first time the night
before in Reno. That second set was a 1-2-3- punch, it just doesn't
get any better than that! The band took their bows at 10:45.
