Michael McClure 80th Birthday
Joint Poetry Reading with Michael C. Ford
at
BEYOND BAROQUE in Venice, California

Thursday, October 20, 2011

Michael C. Ford opened the program with about 30 minutes of poetry readings.

80th birthday honoree Michael McClure followed.  'Maybe Mama Lion' was one of the first poems he read in his program, which he dedicated to Ray Manzarek.  During the program through intermittent storytelling, we learned that McClure and Ford actually met for the first time when they both appeared at the benefit for Norman Mailer's NYC mayoralty campaign in May 1969 at Cinematheque 16.  Jim Morrison and Robby Krieger were also there that night.

Near the end of Michael McClure's progam, a birthday cake appeared and the audience sang Happy Birthday to Michael!
