 May 23, 2013     Robby & Eric Burdon
Robby Krieger plans to tour with his Jam Kitchen band in August and September on a bill with Eric Burdon, according to a news story on radio station B102.7's website.  In the story, Robby references the one local show in August with Ray, but added that Ray was "going through some health issues".  Well, now we know how serious those health issues were. :=(   The story also says that Robby is trying to get John to join him for some charity shows in September.  That could refer to the benefit show he hosts as part of the annual Medlock-Krieger Invitational Golf & Concert Classic, which this year falls on September 13th.  Last year the event raised more than $200,000 for the benefit of St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital in Memphis.  Read the story at: http://b1027.com/robby-krieger-hoping-for-doors-reunion/

 April 12, 2013   "Wiki Articles"
Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger are the subjects of "Wiki Articles" that were published just a few days ago.  Very odd hearing robotic voices,  not to mention some key mispronunciations.  Curious?  Ray's is at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gyYY4A3d-Y.  Robby's is at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_F7mabLzg8  I couldn't find similar links for John or Jim yet, but surely those can't be far behind.

April 2, 2013   Brennan Rock Academy
Robby Krieger, Alice Cooper, members of Kiss and others kicked off grand opening week festivities for the benefit of Brennan Rock & Roll Academy in Sioux City, South Dakota on March 28th.  I already shared a few stories from that night, but this one includes a bunch of photos as well.  Check it out at: http://b1027.com/alice-cooper-all-stars-rock-sioux-falls/  (thanks, Larry)

March 30, 2013    South Dakota benefit
The benefit in South Dakota a few nights ago that was headlined by Alice Cooper, Robby and others has gotten a lot of media attention.  Most of the stories are repetitive, so here are a few select story links: http://ultimateclassicrock.com/alice-cooper-benefit-youth-music-academy/  and  http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/03/29/some-veteran-rockers-help-to-pass-the-torch/

March 25, 2013     maybe SoCA M-K show? <> Robby at benefit
Manzarek-Krieger Band is listed on the venue website to play Pacific Amphitheater in Costa Mesa, CA on Saturday, August 10th:  http://pacamp.com/pa/.   However, when I follow the 'tickets' link, it says the event is no longer available.  Stay tuned while I track this mystery down.

Robby Krieger's benefit performance at the Whisky on Sunday, March 17 was attended by ... me!  I was unsure of the format and hoped that Robby would be playing briefly with each of the sixteen (!!) bands who participated.  But no ... he was the grand finale and played with the "all-stars" previously selected for the honor.  There were rotating vocalists and musicians among the bands on stage with Robby.  Their set was: Break On Through;  Soul Kitchen;  Wishful Sinful;  Wild Child;  Love Me Two Times;  L.A. Woman;  Roadhouse Blues;  and Light My Fire.  Arthur Barrow was on stage from Wishful Sinful thru RHB.  It was a fun afternoon watching these kids of all ages, including some little tykes.  The place was packed with proud family members.  The Rock School Scholarship Fund also benefited from the sales of t-shirts and programs.  This YouTube video shows the two adorable kids sharing vocals on LMF with Robby.  The boy's black t-shirt was Morrison's face and said Mr Mojo Risin; he also sang the vocals on LAW a few songs earlier.  Very animated, that young man was.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCKmwFGcY10

 March 13, 2013      Ty's special in-studio guest
Ty Dennis, long-time drummer for Manzarek-Krieger Band (and before that, the Robby Krieger Band), was joined in the studio earlier this week by none other than Robby Krieger.  Robby was a special guest on a track from an upcoming release from Three From None which features Ty on drums, Larry Marciano on guitars and vocals, and Ian Solomon on bass.  According to Ty's Facebook post about this, the release should be out on I-Tunes and elsewhere in May.  You can see Ty's post and a photo of Robby on Ty's Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/tydennisdrums?ref=ts&fref=ts

 March 6, 2013     Robby's jam last weekend <> Robby's benefit at Whisky
Robby Krieger was part of last weekend's Patrick Warburton Celebrity Golf Tournament for St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital held in Palm Desert, CA at the J.W. Marriott Desert Springs Resort.  The website mydesert.com ran a story sharing what the musical jam was all about and who participated.  It starts at the bottom of page 2 and the meat of the story is on page 3:   http://www.mydesert.com/article/J1/20130304/LIFESTYLES0111/303040011/L-troupe-brings-movie-cabaret-back-Ace

Robby Krieger's performance at the Whisky on March 17 to benefit the Rock School Scholarship Fund is an "all ages" show. The original announcement indicated the show would start at 2:30.  Today's mail brought my ticket along with printed 'show information' which says the show starts 2:00.  Doors open at 1:00 for a pre-party.  There will be a silent auction featuring signed Doors memorabilia and other items, and still photography will be allowed.  Check the website at: http://rockschoolfund.org/ for info.  To order tickets for will-call, phone Neighborhood Rock School at 818-557-7723.  If you get a machine, leave a message and they'll call you back during business hours.

March 4, 2013      Robby to play S.D. benefit with Alice Cooper
Robby Krieger has been added to the grand opening week festivities planned for the Brennan Rock & Roll Academy in Sioux City, South Dakota the last week of March.  Already included in the five days of grand openings (March 26-30) are Alice Cooper, Night Ranger, Vince Neil, and comedian Louie Anderson who will each be performing intimate VIP shows to benefit the Boys & Girls Club.  Robby will appear with Alice Cooper on Thursday, March 28 along with Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer of KISS, and Sebastian Bach.  Mind you, this IS a benefit and tickets for that night's all-star band are $1,000.  Check it out at: http://brennanrockandrollacademy.com/thursday-march-28/To learn more about the Brennan Rock & Roll Academy, visit their site at: http://brennanrockandrollacademy.com/.

March 2, 2013      Robby at Whisky <> Miami details & those brown leather pants
Robby Krieger plays a benefit for the Rock School Scholarship Fund on Sunday, March 17 at the Whisky.  Sure, it's St. Pat's Day, but this show happens at 2:30 in the afternoon, so there's still time to party on later.  Robby's long-time friend & collaborator Arthur Barrow will be there, as well.  For a very affordable (and tax-deductible) minimum donation of $20, you get to see those guys and some of Burbank's finest youth rock bands.  Sounds like fun.  Check their website at: http://rockschoolfund.org/ for the colorful poster, which says doors open at 1:00 for pre-party.  To order tickets for will-call, phone Neighborhood Rock School at 818-557-7723.  You can leave a message, they'll call you back during business hours. (thanks, Wendy)

January 12, 2013     Rock Hall induction ceremony
The Doors were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on this date in 1993, with Eddie Vedder doing the induction honors.  As my ever-present Doors karma would mandate, not only was it the only time the ceremony has been held in Los Angeles, but it was also my birthday.  My friend Kathy and I took vacation days from work so that we could arrive early at the Century Plaza Hotel and hang out in the lobby watching the arrivals.   It was raining like a mo-fo all that day and night, but because we arrived early, were dressed like business people instead of fans, and kept low profiles, we managed to get into the hotel and mill around without attracting negative attention from security.  We saw the arrivals of Dick Clark, Phil Spector, Billy Idol, Cher, Jon Bon Jovi, Chris Isaak, John Fogerty, Don Henley, and many others ... but of course, we were focused on the Big Three, who all graciously stopped to sign autographs as they passed through the lobby:  Ray Manzarek  <>  John Densmore  <>  Robby Krieger.   It was an exciting event to be on the fringe of, and possibly the most exciting & memorable birthday EVER.  If I'd had an extra $1500 - $1700 I didn't need, I could have bought a ticket to attend the event in the ballroom downstairs.  There are numerous YouTube videos of the induction and Eddie Vedder performing with the guys, if you've never seen those before.

 January 8, 2013     HB2RK
Robby Krieger celebrates a birthday today.  At least, I hope he is celebrating.  I'll bet he's playing golf somewhere ;=)   And since I also turn a year older this week, I'm taking the liberty of sharing my fave photo of Robby and me taken October 2010.  Happy birthday to Capricorns everywhere!  P.S.: the inclusion of this photo should clear up a small detail for fans of this site who write and address me as "Dude" ...  ;=)

January 7, 2013    Ray & Robby to Delhi, India
Manzarek-Krieger Band will play the first Fly Music Festival in Delhi, India at Unitech Golf & Country Club in Noida (and yes, there will be no Ida in Noida).  The two-day event happens on February 16 and 17, but I don't know (yet) which day M-K will play.  Tickets go on sale on January 10th.  Other performers at the festival include Limp Bizkit, Anthrax, KT Tunstall, The Wailers, and Dub Pistol.  As I wrote back on December 2, I understand that Manzarek-Krieger will also play in Mumbai, India as well as the United Kingdom, but I have no other info on that yet.  Read the source story and learn more about this festival at:  http://www.indianexpress.com/news/the-doors-limp-bizkit-in-delhi/1055850/0

 December 18, 2012     correction <> Providence recap
I stand corrected.  Yesterday I referenced a video clip as having been from Robby Krieger's Jazz Kitchen show the Met in Providence, RI on December 13th.  Instead, that video clip is the finale from the Metropolis in Montreal on December 5.  Robby sat in with a number of amateur bands for charity on December 4 and 5, which benefited the Maimonides Geriatric Center. (thanks, Owen)

A lucky fan who was at Robby's Providence, RI show last week shared some of the songs they played:  Cosmik Debris; an amazing Riders On The Storm; Under Waterfall; Russian Caravan; and closed with Roadhouse Blues ... among others.  After the show, the band stuck around to chat with fans, sign autographs, and pose for pictures with everyone who wanted one.  That fan went home very happy!  (thanks, Dave B.)

November 18, 2012    Robby benefit show <> Robby phone interview
Robby Krieger headlined the #redfortyler benefit performance this afternoon at the Observatory in Santa Ana, CA.   The benefit sought to raise drug awareness following the death of a Huntington Beach 18-year old from a heroine overdose in September.  The program started with brief sets from four local bands, and then Robby's 55-minute set.  He was supported by Ty Dennis on drums, Phil Chen on bass, Kit Potamkin on keyboards, and Dave Brock on vocals.  A 12-year old blues wunderkind named Ray Goren took the spotlight for one song and stayed on stage to play another.  That young man also had some spotlight time when he shared the stage with Robby and others at the celebrity concert that closed the annual Medlock-Krieger golf tourney & concert back in August.  This afternoon's set list was:  Break On Through;  My Eyes Have Seen You;  Wishful Sinful;  Stormy Monday with Ray Goren on lead guitar and vocals;  Roadhouse Blues;  L.A. Woman;  The End.  The Oedipal references in that last song were seamlessly omitted for this "all ages" show.  Chuck Negron of Three Dog Night closed the show with his set of TDN songs; it was impossible to not sing along with them!  Even Robby joined in on 'Joy To The World'.  I have pictures, but as regular readers know, I always struggle with them.  I will endeavor to get some uploaded later, but no promises.

Robby Krieger did a phone interview with Lisa Berigan of Washington D.C.'s BIG 100.3 radio.  The six minute interview discusses the recent "Live At The Bowl '68" release, as well as the "When You're Strange" documentary.  Robby also discusses that The Doors are looking for fan footage, the John estrangement, 'Other Voices' and 'Full Circle', and more!  Listen to it at: http://www.thebigdc.com/pages/lisa.html?article=10580726

November 10, 2012     Robby in NJ <> Robby in RI
Robby Krieger's Jazz Kitchen has added more dates.  On Tuesday, December 7th they play the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park, NJ.  Asbury Park did sustain damage from Hurricane Sandy, but did not get obliterated like neighboring towns.  I have seen several news clips of NJ Governor Chris Christie touring damaged areas and easily recognized Asbury Park Convention Hall in some of them.  That venue is thankfully still standing and judged structurally intact, but I saw footage of the the distinctive green doors were damaged and dangling.

Robby Krieger's Jazz Kitchen has also added a show at The Met in Providence, Rhode Island on Thursday, December 13. That venue's website is: http://themetri.com/  All the dates are included in the calendar on the home page.

 October 2, 2012    Ray & Robby in A.C. <> Ray & Robby in Tarrytown
Manzarek-Krieger Band played two nights at the Music Box at Borgata Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, NJ on September 21 & 22.  Luckily for those of us who could not be there, Artski was and gives us a 37-minute video overview of the second night including some backstage.  Pretty neat, pretty good.  I wish Artski accompanied them on all their tours!  Check it out at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPQXKYrfQXw&feature=youtu.be  (thanks, Artski)

Manzarek-Krieger Band wrapped up their east coast tour last night at Tarrytown Music Hall in Tarrytown, NY.  A lucky fan who was there sent this report:  "The show started at 8:20 pm with Roadhouse Blues, Break on Through, My Eyes Have Seen You, Peace Frog, When the Music’s Over, Love Street, Whisky Bar, Back Door Man w/ Rick Manzarek  that included some Crawling King Snake in the middle, Riders on the Storm that included a great riff by Ray, Five to One, Touch Me, Love Her Madly and LA Woman. The encore was People Are Strange and Light My Fire with Dave Brock throwing in a couple of verses of Celebration of the Lizard. The show ended at 10:25 pm. Tarrytown is a great music hall and reminded me of a mini version on the Fillmore East, especially when Dave Brock got the crowd to come to the front of the stage. Great crowd and good vibes. Cannot wait until the next show".  (thanks, Gerry)

October 1, 2012    Robby in Botanic Garden video
Robby Krieger toured the U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington D.C. last Monday, which I reported a few days ago with a story link.  If you missed that, here it is again: http://thehill.com/capital-living/in-the-know/258495-judy-kurtz  Now we know who the other friend with Robby was, because we can all take the tour that Robby did last week courtesy of a 15-minute video by Artski.  The video shows the varied array of plants, with Robby and his friend in and out of the shots.  Plus, you get to listen to selections from 'Singularity'.  Check out the video at:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnZ0K3T7-aU.  While you're there, check out the other videos by artski101.  (thanks, Artski)

 September 27, 2012    Robby in D.C.
Robby Krieger toured the U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington D.C. on Monday.  And apparently, he was inspired to break out in song a few times!  Robby was in town for the Manzarek-Krieger show that night in Alexandria, VA.  According to this story from TheHill.com, he was in the company of friend and former House Administration Committee staffer Richard Landon: http://thehill.com/capital-living/in-the-know/258495-judy-kurtz

 September 23, 2012     A.C. Friday <> A.C. Saturday
Manzarek-Krieger Band played the Music Box at Borgata Casino in Atlantic City, NJ on Friday night (and Saturday night).  A lucky fan who was there on Friday night has shared the set list what he described as a crisp and energetic 90-minute set that began at 9:10 p.m.:  Roadhouse Blues ~~ Break On Through ~~ My Eyes Have Seen You (newly rehearsed, according to Ray) ~~ Peace Frog ~~ When The Music's Over ~~ band intros ~~ People Are Strange ~~ Alabama Song ~~ Back Doors Man (with Rick Manczarek on guitar, looking cool & sounding great, & including a Crawling King Snake verse) ~~ Riders On The Storm ~~ Touch Me ~~ L.A. Woman ~~ encore: Light My Fire.  I think this lucky fan was catching both night, so there may be another set list report for the Saturday show.  (thanks, Dave)

The Manzarek-Krieger show on Saturday night at Borgata Casino in Atlantic City was attended by the same lucky fan who was at the Friday night show, and he has again shared the set list and his impressions.  First, he rated Friday night 3-1/2 stars in comparison to a 5-star show on Saturday!  They played from 9:15 to 11:03 (precise!) and were blazing from the get-go.  The Saturday set list was:   Roadhouse Blues ~~ Break On Through ~~ My Eyes Have Seen You ~~ Peace Frog ~~ When The Music's Over ~~ People Are Strange ~~ Alabama Song ~~ Back Door Man (again with Rick Manczarek on guitar) ~~ Riders On The Storm ~~ Moonlight Drive / Horse Latitudes (Ray vocals) / Wild Child ~~ Touch Me ~~ L.A. Woman ~~ encore: Soul Kitchen ~~ Light My Fire.  In other words, the same set as Friday with the addition of Moonlight Drive / Horse Latitudes, and Soul Kitchen in the encore.  When the band returned to encore, Robby asked if they wanted Crystal Ship; he and Ray conferred and they ended up playing Soul Kitchen instead.  Dave Brock invited people down front to dance, which sent several obviously 'comped' high-rollers bolting in fear.  LOL  Contributor Dave described it as an exceptional night!  (thanks again & happy birthday, Dave)

 September 22, 2012     Robby & Mau Maus
The Mau MausI've never heard of them myself, but it appears that Robby joined them onstage at Hollywood's Roosevelt Hotel for 'Roadhouse Blues' at something called Blue Moons and Future Stars.  Unless this was a surprise appearance, then - oh my - why didn't the Mau Maus bother to learn the song first?  Robby tried his best to get them on track.  Watch it at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-K2IqBEQ9u8

The Doors appeared on BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test in 1972.  (Once upon a time, it was okay - and legal - to call themselves 'The Doors' without Jim Morrison's participation).  Here's a video of their OGWT performance of "I'm Horny, I'm Stoned" from their first post-Jim album, 'Other Voices', with Robby on vocals.  This is great!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W66Y5ZG6Hy8   (thanks, Gilles)

September 3, 2012      Robby at Viper Room <> Robby with BLS <> Ray & Robby with Marilyn Manson
Robby Krieger and Rich Robinson played the Viper Room on Friday, August 17 as part of the Sunset Strip Music Festival.  I was not there, as I was across the street at the Roxy awaiting Ray Manzarek with X.  But, writer Theresa Picciotti was there and did a real nice re-cap with set list on JamBands.com.  Check it out at:  http://www.jambands.com/reviews/shows/2012/08/29/robby-krieger-and-rich-robinson-viper-room-los-angeles-ca-8-17

Robby Krieger joined Black Label Society on stage on Saturday, August 18 at the Sunset Strip Music Festival for a searing 'Roadhouse Blues'.  This story link includes a great quality video of that performance:  http://www.epiphone.com/News/Features/News/2012/Zakk-Wylde-and-Robby-Krieger-on-Sunset-Strip.aspx

August 27, 2012       SSMF HOB VIP party <> Medlock-Krieger tourney <> Robby on Supertramp tribute <> Marilyn Manson
Imagine my surprise to realize that I never uploaded my write-up from last Thursday night's VIP party at the House of Blues to launch the Sunset Strip Music Festival.  Boy, is my face red.  I knew I had not dealt with the photos yet, but I thought the story was out there.  I was really tired.  My bad.  Here it is, the House of Blues VIP party.  If and when I get the photos added, I will re-post the link for those interested.

Last Monday was the 2012 Medlock-Krieger Celebrity Golf & Concert  Event at Moorpark Country Club.  This was my third year as a volunteer, and the event just keeps getting bigger and better.  There were at least 50 foursomes golfing.  I was stationed at Canyon Crest 8, a "hole-in-one" opportunity where four very handsome Harley-Davidsons were parked.  If one of the golfers got a hole-in-one, everyone in the winner's group would win a bike.  At the end of the day, those bikes were going back to the dealership!  Another hole teased golfers for Mercedes-Benz's that also left without new owners.  I am working on that write-up and hope to finish and upload tomorrow.

Robby Krieger played on a recently released tribute to Supertramp titled 'Songs Of The Century: An All-Star Tribute to Supertramp' from Cleopatra.  Robby, along with Rod Argent, play on "School", the final track.  Read more about this at: http://ultimateclassicrock.com/supertramp-tribute-album/

Ray and Robby joined Marilyn Manson at the end of his headlining set at the Sunset Strip Music Festival.  Although my friend and I were there all day and were waiting for that, as it got closer we agreed that neither one of us wanted to see that creep, and/or be anywhere near that group of fans ... so we left before MM took the stage!  As previously reported, Ray and Robby did three songs with that band:  'People Are Strange', 'Love Me Two Times', and 'Five To One'.   Based on this review by Randall Roberts for the LA Times, we did not miss much.  The journalist ended his story by saying that Manson was so bad that not even Ray and Robby's appearance could salvage the set, and that "on the contrary, it only made Manson's shortcomings more obvious."   Read the full review at:  http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/music/posts/la-et-ms-sunset-strip-music-festival-marilyn-manson-dead-sara-20120819,0,4883466.story

August 19, 2012      SSMF events - news stories & videos <> site maintenance
Yesterday's big day for the Sunset Strip Music Festival was hot and sunny (as usual).  As previously described, Sunset Boulevard was closed to traffic between Doheny on the west end, and San Vicente (where the Whisky is) on the east end.  Large stages were erected in the middle of the street at both ends.  There was also at least one side stage for a local radio station, as well as live music scheduled throughout the day and night at the clubs.  Robby's first appearance was with a band called Black Label Society.  To be honest, I had never heard of them and when my friend and I got into position to await Robby's arrival on stage, I knew why.  Let's just say they were not "my people" and was most def was not my kind of music.  We stood towards the back of the crowd and then found ourselves on the fringe of a mosh pit.  Robby played just one song with BLS, that was 'Roadhouse Blues' to close that band's set:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjN88HLYGNw.

There are plenty of news stories and YouTube videos from the weekend.  Following are links to many of them from the Thursday night House of Blues event:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QztDfSkW6Xo  <>  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ELY37IR9kQ&feature=relmfu  <>  http://mavrixonline.com/2012/08/17/doors-honored-sunset-strip-music-festival/  <>   http://www.billboard.com/events/the-doors-light-up-sunset-with-linda-perry-1007858152.story#/events/the-doors-light-up-sunset-with-linda-perry-1007858152.story  <>  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0foK9hcfJlQ  <>  http://www.flickr.com/photos/sleepydoll3/7803958708/   <>  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QSUO77CnpI  <>  http://www.patrika.com/photo.aspx?id=36075  <>  http://www.lamag.com/culturefilesblog/blogentry.aspx?BlogEntryID=10417241

My next site update will be on Tuesday, and will cover Robby's all-star jam that is the finale to the 5th Annual Medlock-Krieger Celebrity Invitational and Concert.  I will be volunteering there tomorrow, as I have for several years previous, and will be able to tell you all about that fun-filled event.  As it so happens, Yahoo! is doing some planned system maintenance between 11:30 p.m. PT August 20 until 6:30 a.m. PT on Tuesday, August 21 ... site visitors will see a message that the site is temporarily offline for that Yahoo! system maintenance.

 August 18, 2012      SSMF events
Today is the BIG (and final) day of the Sunset Strip Music Festival.  I have so many pix to download and sort that I'm a little blotto.  Maybe tomorrow.  I can't even get my write-up about the Thursday night launch party finished.  Anyway ... the all-day festivities begin in a few hours.  The music starts as early as 1:00 on some of the stages, both indoors and outside.  Some of the music will roll on until 1:00 - 2:00 a.m. (I'll be long gone by then!).  According to what has been publicized so far, Ray and Robby will join Black Label Society on the outdoor West Stage during their set between 3:50 to 5:05 p.m.   And of course, they will join headliner Marilyn Manson on that same stage tonight.  MM's set runs from 9:30 to 11:00 p.m.   The Sunset Strip is closed off between Doheny and San Vicente.  Today will either be an exciting & music-filled day, or an exhausting zoo ... depending on your age, stamina and footwear choices.

Last night's festivities featured shows at all the clubs along 'The Strip'.  I don't know if it's true, but I heard that KISS was doing a secret show at the Key Club.  Anyway, Robby ruled the Viper Room with Roadhouse Rebels cohort Rich Robinson.  I missed that show, as I planted myself in a good spot up the street at the Roxy to await Ray's set with X.  Pictures will follow as soon as I can.

Although I can't get my Thursday night write-up done right now, I can share that John Densmore DID show up at the House of Blues but alas, did not partake of the celebration.  There are photos of him on the red carpet with his lady.  He showed up after Ray and Robby were done in that area and had gone inside.  I heard that after posing on the red carpet, he walked into the House of Blues and then walked out another door, but I can't confirm that.  What I can confirm is that there were several fans I spoke to outside in line that night who were specifically hoping to see John and were disappointed by his non-appearance.  I was disappointed, too.  I had hoped that John would at least appear on stage ... even if only on the other side of the stage from his band mates, to join in the acceptance of the Elmer Valentine Award that was presented to the band and to enjoy the tributes and accolades that flowed that night.  This estrangement has spanned ten years (or more).  I am saddened that John continues to opt to miss out on these events that celebrate the legacy that he is an integral part of.  Enough already (IMHO).  End of soapbox.

May 13, 2012     Robby show in L.A. <> pix from Robby show
Robby Krieger Band played Good Hurt in West L.A. last night with the jazz musicians that he has toured with the last few years:  Arthur Barrow on bass; Tommy Mars on keyboards; Tom Brechtlein on drums; and Larry Klimas on saxophones & woodwinds.  Stage right was artist Norton Wisdom creating his interesting, morphing paintings.  Robby broke a guitar string during opener song Chunga's Revenge.  Tommy Mars said at one point that they have been writing together as a band, and several of those songs were included in their set.  Arthur Barrow sang lead on one of those new songs.  The set list went like this:  Chunga's Revenge;  Let It Slide;  Hothead (about Hosni Mubarik);  What Was That?;  Cosmik Debris;  Under Waterfall;  Screen Junkie;  Russian Caravan;  The Meek.  Waylon Krieger then joined the band on-stage for Back Door Man, handling lead vocals.  The last song was a rousing Roadhouse Blues.  Waylon was still on stage, but vocals were handled by someone I don't know (maybe someone will write & let me know who he was! ... Owen?).   Later I'll add some photos from last night.

April 27, 2012    Manzarek-Krieger in Anaheim <> pix from Anaheim HOB
Manzarek-Krieger Band, with Dave Brock on vocals, played to a sold-out crowd last night at Anaheim's House of Blues.   I did not write down the set list, but the 1:50 set opened with Roadhouse Blues and the encore ended with Light My Fire.  For me, the musical highlights were a scorching Who Do You Love, and the surprise rarity My Eyes Have Seen You.  Ray's brother Rick was onstage playing guitar for 2 or 3 songs, and their brother Jim was on the side of the stage.  During the LMF finale, Jim was also on stage with his two brothers and the rest of the band.  Check back later, I'll upload a few photos from the show.

Robby Krieger sat with Andy Chanley, a deejay from L.A.'s 100.3 The Sound for a 12-minute interview.  From the discussion (and post date of the video), this was done last week in advance of Robby's "My Turn" deejay stint that he did on Sunday night at that station.  Nice chat!  Check it out at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpFim7-T4-U

April 15, 2012    Robby Krieger gift <> Robby on 'My Turn' radio show
Robby Krieger gave his wife a pretty nice surprise last week in the form of a shiny new Mercedes SUV!  The dealer must've called TMZ right away to let them know.  Robby knows how to treat his lady right, but don't begrudge him this extravagance; he is a kind and generous guy who participates in countless charity events including co-sponsoring his own annual charity golf tourney with sports artist Scott Medlock (coming up on August 20th).  My only issue with this story is that they refer to him as "former" rock star ...  he's Robby Krieger, fer crissakes ... the adjective "former" does not apply here.  Read the full story at:  http://www.tmz.com/2012/04/15/the-doors-robby-krieger-car-wife/

Robby Krieger's guest DJ spot on "My Turn" this evening on L.A.'s 100.3 The Sound consisted of these tunes and discussions:  the first song Robby selected was 'The Thrill Is Gone' by B.B. King.  Robby explained that horn player Paul Harris also played on The Soft Parade album.  Next was 'Hard To Handle' by the Black Crowes (written by Otis Redding).  Robby informed that Rich Robinson is one of the musicians in his Roadhouse Rebels band, and that they will be playing in Minnesota and Denver next month.  This answers a question I've had, because there was an L.A. date announced for May 25 with the venue TBA.  I thought it was a tough pull to get to the MN festival the next day, so maybe that L.A. show is postponed.  Next up was 'House of the Rising Sun' by the Animals, and Robby reminisced about playing and touring with Eric Burdon many years ago.  'My Sharona' by The Knack followed.  Robby talked about the vital drums in that song, played by his friend the late Bruce Gary, who also played on many of Robby's solo albums.  Next came 'Street Fighting Man' by the Rolling Stones, one of Robby's fave Stones songs; he speculated how Keith may have gotten that sound.  'Reeling In The Years' by Steely Dan contains some of his fave guitar playing on a record.  'Purple Haze' by Jimi Hendrix was preceded by Robby talking about the first time he heard it.  That was during a video shoot in early 1967 with Murray The K, who played it for them and it blew him away!  'Louie Louie' by the Kingsmen is one of Robby's fave rock & roll songs of all time ... it's so simple, and probably the first song that musicians learn how to play.  Robby's next selection was 'Who Do You Love' by George Thorogood.  He said it's a great version, but not sure it's as good as The Doors version.  LOL.  Robby said he just missed seeing Thorogood a few weeks ago when he played a show in the valley, while Robby was on the Experience Hendrix tour.  He'll catch him next time!  Then for comparison, Robby followed that with The Doors version of 'Who Do You Love' with his 'cool slide playing', if he does say so himself!  Yes indeed!  I know which version I like better.  ;=)  Next, Robby talked about Jose Feliciano's version of 'Light My Fire'.  He said he did not like it at first (I still don't), but after Jose recorded it, it became more commercial and others began to record it and it became a standard in the industry, so he thanks Jose for that.  Robby added that publishing-wise, LMF is worth more than all their other songs combined!  Then Robby played back-to-back LMFs:  Jose Feliciano's version, and then the real-deal!  I never tire of hearing that song!!  He finished with the beautiful and soothing 'Southern Cross' from his most recent solo CD, "Singularity".  After a plug for the upcoming Manzarek-Krieger show at Anaheim House of Blues on April 26, followed by shows in Las Vegas and Laughlin, Robby said goodbye 'until the next time'.

 March 15, 2012     Egyptian Q&A clip
Back on January 20th, Hollywood's Egyptian Theater premiered the DVD "The Doors   Mr. Mojo Risin:  The Making of L.A. Woman".  I wrote about it at the time and probably shared a YouTube clip or two that surfaced of the Q & A that followed.  Now, here comes a good quality 4-1/2 minute video of the Q & A filmed by Eagle Rock.  Most of the clip is from the DVD, but there is a little from the premiere event.  In case you don't recognize everyone in the group, left to right are:  legendary L.A. deejay Jim Ladd as moderator; Robby and Ray; Bruce Botnick; and Jac Holzman.  As I did at the time, I again call your attention to the very cool Doors shirt that Robby is wearing at the Egyptian as well as in the DVD.  I was told that it's a prototype and might become part of their merchandise line.  Watch the clip at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIeIZ041vXY.   (thanks, Gilles)

 February 12, 2012     Grammy memories
It's Grammy Awards day.  It was just a year ago that we (Doors fans) had not just one, but TWO contenders we were cheering for.  Unfortunately, Robby's solo CD "Singularity" was not the winner in the Best Instrumental Pop Album for 'Singularity'.  However, the Tom DiCillo-written and directed documentary "When You're Strange" did indeed win in the Best Long Form Video (DVD) category, and Robby and co-producers Jeff Jampol and John Beug were on hand to accept the award.

January 21, 2012    LAW screening at Egyptian
Ray Manzarek & Robby Krieger, along with Bruce Botnick, were the not-so-surprising "special guests" at last night's premiere screening of 'The Doors   Mr. Mojo Risin':  The Story of L.A. Woman' at Hollywood's beautiful and historic Egyptian Theater.  You don't need to hear my personal review of the film.  There are professionals who do that much better than I could, and the reviews are in abundance.  Besides, no one has ever accused me of being impartial about this band.  Instead, I'll relate the first-person experience from last night.  There was a VIP reception in the lobby area that preceded the admittance of the hundreds of fans lined up in the courtyard.  There was also a lengthy stand-by line for this sold-out event.  A table was set up inside to sell not only other Doors releases, but also the new LAW DVD ... so fans were able to purchase that four days ahead of its official release date.  Once everyone was seated, The Doors manager Jeff Jampol made a few opening remarks and introduced Elektra Records founder Jac Holzman.  Jac spoke for about ten minutes and then turned it over to local DJ legend Jim Ladd, who served as emcee.  Following the screening of the film, Ray, Robby, Bruce Botnick and Jac Holzman emerged from the VIP seats and took to the chairs lined up in front, along with Jim Ladd, for the audience Q &A.  I didn't write down everything from the Q&A, but here are some comments that stood out (or that I can read my writing).  Regarding the clever use of "billboards" to introduce each song, I'm pretty sure the answer was that it was Jeff's idea.  Ray called Robby the band's "secret weapon".  Jim Ladd praised Jac Holzman as a 'wonderful poetic soul' ...  Robby remarked that no other label "got them".  Jac then commented that he didn't "get them" either the first few nights, but that he kept going back.  When asked about the decision to record the band at their rehearsal workshop instead of the studio, Bruce Botnick said it was because they were most comfortable there.  Bruce also said that one thing done differently for LAW was that they worked on one song at a time, and finished it, before moving on to the next, instead of working one one song for awhile, then putting it aside to start work on another one.  Jac spoke about his decision to delay the release of the first LP until January, after the Christmas music season ended.  Elektra did not release any other LPs in January, so all their emphasis was on The Doors.  Jac also said that following Jim's death, he left the L.A. Woman billboard up for six months in tribute.  Someone asked if any of the LAW songs had been considered for inclusion on Morrison Hotel, and the answer was no.  It was Bruce Botnick's idea to put the whispers in Riders On The Storm.  Robby said that being on Elektra was great because it gave an aura of being an 'underground band', and that all the records he owned prior were from Elektra.  Oh, and "smart people liked The Doors".  Someone asked if they will play the Whisky again (they were there in August 2011) .. and Ray said "yes".  Ray then went on to say that in late June they are heading to Russia and Europe again.  They will play Moscow, St. Petersburg and Kiev and other European dates and that John Densmore is always welcome to join them.  Someone asked about the Oliver Stone film.  Robby and Ray both praised Val Kilmer's work and the music in the film, and Robby added that Kilmer should have won awards.  One under-informed audience member commented that Ray and Robby seem to be close, and asked 'do you not talk to John Densmore?"  (She has some sad historical catching up to do.)  Someone asked what they miss most about Jim.  Robby said that when Jim was around, 'there was always something happening!'  Ray added that he misses playing with Jim and John, and losing oneself in the power of the music.  As the Q&A session wrapped up, Jac Holzman said it was the best film he has ever seen about the making of a record.  Bruce Botnick added that there is a "holy grail" that will be let loose in the next few months.  They all posed for pix for a few minutes before exiting through the side door.  I thought the film was great and REALLY appreciated the opportunity to watch it on a big screen.  The DVD's bonus features were not screened last night and I have not had a chance to watch that yet.  I must comment that Robby was wearing a VERY cool shirt in the film's interview segments, and again last night.  I don't know if it is custom-made or a prototype for future merchandise, but I want one for myself!  It's a subtle pattern, so be sure to take notice of that when you watch the DVD.

The annual Medlock-Krieger Invitational Golf Tournament & Concert will be on Monday, August 20 this year.  Once again, it will be at the Moorpark Country Club, and will again benefit St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital.  It's way too early to be drumming up volunteers, but I'll let you know when it's time if you'd like to participate.

Skrillex cannot be ignored.  (I have been trying).  No apologies, I am not the 'target demographic' for his type of music anyway.  This video was released for "Breakin' A Sweat" featuring Ray, Robby and John: http://www.vevo.com/watch/skrillex/breakn-a-sweat/USQY51224268  Don't get your hopes up, John was NOT in the studio at the same time that Ray and Robby were.   :=(   I'm unsure if it is the same one I shared a few months ago.  Anyway, if this scene is your cup of tea, Skrillex has a bunch of L.A.-area dates in the near future: http://www.skrillex.com/  (thanks, Ruben)
