The Doors of the 21st Century
Wembley Arena, London, England
December 11, 2003
Wembley is a long arena with banked seats on the sides. All seats looked to be filled except for the very top two rows. The stage was about 5-1/2 to 6 feet high. Carmina Burana began at 8:20. Robby entered wearing a colorful, striped sweater and olive green pants with orange tabs. Ian wore a black long sleeved shirt tucked into blue jeans, a black pea coat, and white boots. Ray wore a dark jacket and dark pants. Ty wore a long sleeve dark sweat and knit cap. Phil wore black pants with a white stripe and a black tee shirt under a black jacket.
Roadhouse Blues started things off, with Robby coming center stage to play before moving over to stand in front of Ray as they traded their licks. Ian played tambourine, and the house lights came up each time "got myself a beer" was sung by one and all.
Break On Through was next .. Ty shed his head covering before they began. When that song ended, Ian and Phil both removed their jackets before starting When The Music's Over. Ray commented that Ian had told him that magic mushrooms can be bought in stores there ... how did that happen? After the song ended, Ray introduced Ian; Ty "the monster" Dennis; from Jamaica: Phil Chen; and the best goddamn guitar player, Robby Krieger. Robby introduced from Chicago, Illinois in the US of A: Raymond Daniel Manzarek. Ray stood and blew kisses as he bowed to the applause.
Love Me Two Times followed ... Robby moved over to the area in front of Ray, who was on his feet playing his Alesis keyboards, as Ian danced around with the tambourine. While Phil switched his guitars for the next song, Ian remarked, "Who'd have thought I'd be with these guys!" Ray said, "It's great to be in England." Robby said this was the best audience on the whole fucking tour. Ray commented about a buzzing in the bass which was giving him a problem, and Robby said, "Everything's fucked up as usual." When the sound problem was resolved, they began Alabama Song, followed by Back Door Man. At the start of Five To One, Ray did a military-like march to and fro across the stage, and goosed Robby in the ass on his way back!!
Robby removed the striped sweater to reveal a one-sided D21C tour shirt, as the stools were brought out, and Ty and Phil disappeared from the stage. Ray said, "This is just us" as they began with Crystal Ship. Ian rose to his feet to sing the last few lines of the song ... beautifully done! People Are Strange followed, and then Ray introduced "the treat" ... the only rock 'n' roll guitarist who plays flamenco ... then Ray joined the others offstage. It was 9:20 as Robby began the flamenco solo which eventually segued into Spanish Caravan. Ian returned to the stage with a tambourine and did his 'water spout'!
Ray said that now they would do a bunch of songs from L. A. Woman 'we never got to play' ... and dedicated them: 'This is for Jim." Changeling led off this part of the show, as Ray played out with his right foot up on the keys. Love Her Madly, Been Down So Long with Robby on bottleneck, and Peace Frog. The sounds of thunder, and rolling storm clouds and lightning flashes on the video screen behind Ty's drums, signaled Riders On The Storm. Before the song's final verse, Ian danced around with maracas while Ray played an extended keyboard solo.
Texas Radio began with Robby bouncing and dancing. Again, Ray finished the song on his feet. Ian said, "This group is the reason I went to L.A., and the reason I'm back." With that, they went into Hyacinth House. Ian moved over by Ray as both of them sang the song out. Ray said, "Let's get funky now" and Robby began the chords to Crawling King Snake. D21C Webmaster Artski was visible onstage with a videocam filming Robby on bottleneck.
At 10:15 Ray said, "Let's go on the freeway, Robby, let's go up to San Francisco and see McClure and get some weed and get stoned" ... as they went into L. A. Woman. However, Ian was offstage, apparently in the pit, as the song began so Ray sang the first few lines while Ian crawled back up onto the stage to take over.
It was 10:25 and the band left the stage, but Ian stayed behind to say, "Let the people dance, you fascist fuckers." I guess the security was hassling fans who were trying to dance. Ian left, and D21C manager Tom Vitorino came onstage and said, "The band's right over there -- they wanna know if you wanna hear some more." When the band returned, Ian began by calling out: Scotland, Ireland, North Ireland, Wale ... all were met with boo's ... then England, to resounding cheers!! Ian told the audience: "We played Portugal, Spain, and France .. this is the Big Guys ... we don't need any more violence, fuck violence." A thrilling Not To Touch The Earth followed, which closed with Ian saying: James Douglas Morrison was the Lizard King -- he did everything.
Ian then said, "You'll like the next one .. this one's about my brother Brian" as the band began Wild Child. It was now 10:35, and Ray asked, "What do you wanna hear? We're gonna play one more song." Robby joined in, "What do you wanna hear?" Ian responded to someone in front with, "We don't do She Sells Sanctuary, sorry."
Ray teased, "Would you like to hear, oh, say, Light My Fire?" Naturally, Light My Fire was next! Ray played his solo with his right hand only and his left hand on his knee -- and then with both hands as he stood and hunched over the keys. Ray and Robby were bouncing and jumping at each other at the end of Ray's exciting solo, with Ray making bandleader gestures with his left hand, as if he were orchestra-leading his right hand. Robby said, "Let's hear it for Ray" ... and Ray blew kisses in response to the appreciative applause. Robby came stage front for his solo, which included samples of both Elinor Rigby and My Favorite Things. He moved back by Ty for the drum spotlight. Ian returned and crouched on the drum riser while Robby introduced Phil and let him take a solo turn.
When that song ended at 10:50, Ray, Ian, and Robby gathered and took bows before leaving the stage. As the audience began to leave their seats, Ray returned to the stage and began to play Soul Kitchen. The audience went nuts, climbing over rows of chairs and scrambling to get to the front of the stage. Robby moved over to Ray for the song's finale ... Ian tossed his tambourine into the audience, and the show ended at 11:00. Another amazing night of rock and roll !!!
