John Densmore's Tribaljazz

L. A. County Museum of Art

August 13, 2004

As part of the Friday night free jazz concert series at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, John Densmore's Tribaljazz was scheduled to play this evening between 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Luckily, my friend arrived early and was able to save three seats for us in the third row, right in front of where the band setup was.

The seats were filled and there were people standing all around the perimeter of the Times Mirror Central Court at the 5:30 showtime.   Within a few minutes, a line of four musicians led by John, entered  the plaza from the nearby building playing their instruments as they played and danced their way up the center aisle to the stage.

Tribaljazz played two songs, then John came stage forward to introduce some of the band members:  Art Ellis on flute and saxophones, who also wrote both preceding songs;  Osama Affifi on stand-up bass;  and Christina Berio on percussion, shakers and maracas.  John said he would introduce the rest of the band later, after they played a song from his old band in a salsa style, which was 'Riders on the Storm.'

John introduced Quinn Johnson on piano, Azziz Faye and Marcel Adjibl on African drums and percussion.  After two more songs, the band took a break for about 30 minutes.

When the band was ready to return for their second set, they once again made their entrance from the building and danced and played up a different aisle to the stage.

When John thanked the audience for coming, he said that he was told that this was about the largest crowd that the event has had.
