George Winston

at CERRITOS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

November 20, 2002

This is a pretty low-key review.  My friend Beverly and I arrived filled with anticipation.    We had hoped that ALOT of Doors music from George Winston's latest CD, "Night Divides The Day" would be in the program.    Even more so, we had hoped that Ray would make an appearance and join George onstage in a mini-reprise of the dual piano concert they performed in New York City in late September before Ray headed to Toronto for the Doors - Harley show there.

Alas, it was not to be.   The show began at 8:10, and George played until 9:10 before taking a 20-minute break.  Not a single Doors song in the first set!    We were getting antsy.

The second set resumed at 9:30, and finally at 9:40 we got the first song:  Crystal Ship.   We high-fived each other:  it is my personal favorite as well as Beverly's.     He played it beautifully.

George next introduced that he would be playing Love Me Two Times, followed by Love Her Madly.   LM2X was jaunty and fun ... in our mind's eye we could see Robby playing those chords and singing!   That song is a staple of his Robby Krieger Band shows, and he often opens with it.

Love Her Madly was a bit too full of piano notes ... the melody got lost within all the keys he was playing ... probably a non-issue to non-Doors fans, but we know the song too well and missed the essential song.

After a few other songs, George returned to The Doors catalog with Riders On The Storm, beautifully done.

We bailed when we learned that the final song was non-Doors.    There was a one-song encore, but it was not another Doors song.
