Open - Door Policy
Densmore had "open invitation" to join us, says Doors pair Manzarek and Krieger
Two surviving members of 60s icons The Doors recently expressed their astonishment that their former drummer John Densmore is to bring a lawsuit against them for reviving the band, and will try to force them to adopt the name Doors 21st Century.
Keyboard player Ray Manzarek and guitarist Robbie Krieger recently brought in former Cult singer Ian Astbury to replace late frontman Jim Morrison, and Densmore's place was taken by ex-Police drummer Stewart Copeland, but the two founders insist their former colleague gave them his blessing, and was aware of an "open invitation" to participate in the reunion. Densmore claims breach of contract, trademark infringement, unfair competition, and even a share of the profits from the band's first show.
Manzarek said: "Everybody asked him and he said: 'No, my ears [are too damaged].' Then I said: 'Why not play hand percussion?' And John said: 'No way. I'm not a sideman.' Instead he chose to sue us. It's ridiculous. The guy who put together the band and plays keyboards is performing with the guy who wrote 'Light My Fire', 'Love Me Two Times' and 'Love Her Madly'. If we're not The Doors, then who is?"
The band are planning a world tour and album. The Doors is owned jointly by the surviving band members and the estates of Morrison and his late wife Pamela Courson. Manzarek, Krieger and Densmore continued to record as The Doors after Morrison's death in 1971, but eventually split.
