The Chet Helms "Tribal Stomp"
In memoriam: Chet Helms was not a household name like rival Jerry Garcia, but he was an integral part of San Francisco's musical flowering in the mid-1960s. Helms, who died of stroke complications in June at age 62, was Janis Joplin's manager and, even more importantly, played a key role in developing the rock concert as we know it (minus the lip-syncing and high prices).
So it's fitting that a large number of San Francisco music veterans will be performing in his memory Oct. 30 in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. Among the dozens of performers will be Nick Gravenites, War, Ray Manzarek, Taj Mahal, Dan Hicks, Paul Kantner, Blue Cheer, Iron Butterfly, Sammy Hagar, Lydia Pense, Country Joe McDonald and former members of such classic S.F. bands as It's a Beautiful Day, Journey, the Tubes and Quicksilver.
The concert will, of course, be free.
