the last Doors news:
To Doors fans and loyal readers,
Thank you one last time for the emails I have received since announcing the closing of this website. I really and truly appreciate the time that you each took to say goodbye. Some were short and sweet messages of thanks and appreciation. Many of you have shared your own stories about shows you saw, band members you met, and other great adventures you had because you learned about the opportunities on this site. It is gratifying to hear those stories. I have saved all your emails; every single one of them is meaningful and appreciated. Although most of us have never met in person, I know that some on-line friendships will continue.
Readers have asked
me questions in recent weeks, some of which I'll try to answer:
What am I going to do with my free time? I retired in 2003, but this website quickly replaced that career. It's going to be like retiring all over again, but for real. I follow many other bands besides The Doors, and always have concerts and stuff happening; I am never bored. One of these days I will tackle my memorabilia collections and start downsizing / thinning stuff out. If and when that happens, I will be selling as njdawter on eBay (but don't expect to see the rarities for sale).
Am I going to write a book? Absolutely and unequivocally NO. There is no book coming with untold stories, not ever. End of subject.
Future contact method? The email addy that Doors fans have used to contact me through this website will stay active for the foreseeable future: email@example.com.
Facebook: Yes, I am on Facebook. Please do not take offense if you have tried to "friend" me in the past (or in the future) and I do not accept. I have a small "friends" list and intend to keep it that way, limited to family, personal friends and old classmates. In other words, all of my FB friends are people that I actually know, i.e., have met in person, and have an ongoing relationship with based on common interests. Even if we once met at a Doors event, please understand and respect that I do not need to know more about you, nor you about me. One of my goals is to spend less time looking at a computer screen.
Miscellaneous personal questions: Yes. Yes. Sometimes. No, never. Probably. One of these days, I hope so. Most definitely.
I had great fun creating the "Top Ten Fave Doors Moments" countdown, and I heard from many of you who enjoyed reading it. It certainly made me reminisce, review old photos from good times past, focus, and try to prioritize. That wasn't easy, and there were other great moments that simply didn't make the final cut. It also made me realize that I have truly been blessed to have so many opportunities and so much access. If I could change anything about that countdown, though, it would be #10 - getting to know and be known by the surviving members of The Doors, most def deserves a higher ranking ... so if I had a "do-over", I'd move that up to the #3 position, topped only by the website and the very first Doors concert. What was I thinking? Knowing those guys has been beyond awesome. I was losing sleep over that error, and wanted to get the correction on the record! ;-)
When I began sketching out these closing comments, I intended to single out fans and readers who have contributed so much and helped this website become the success it was. It quickly became clear that was an unrealistic goal: the list of names was impossibly long and probably incomplete. I didn't want to slight anyone by unintended omission, so I scratched that idea and decided to single out just a very few for special mention:
Glyn Emmerson, who "birthed" this website for me, as elaborated on in "Top Ten Fave Moment #2". He created one of those "life-altering" events.
Gilles Yepremian, who has been such a solid friend and a tireless resource of Doors news. Gilles knows everyone and everything! Without a doubt, Gilles has contributed more news and story links to idafan than anyone. Merci beaucoup, mon ami.
Beverly, my best Doors pal. We found our synergy when comparing our fave Doors song, and we both answered 'Crystal Ship'. Beverly helped me do the first upload to go live with idafan. It was her suggestion that I add the date & time of last updates at the top of the home page for readers' convenience. And, Beverly suggested that I create a "Top Ten Fave Doors Moments" countdown. We have taken many road trips and plane rides over the last 20 years to follow these musicians and make some great rock & roll memories along the way. No reason to stop now.
Karma IS telling me it is time to go. Consider this: I bought my beloved Doors-mobile in August 2002, the same month that this website went on-line. Now, eleven years later, and in the same month that I am closing the website, the Doors-mobile came to its untimely end. Coincidence?
I'm not surrendering my self-declared title as #1 Doors Fan. I'll still be around at every SoCA Doors-related event that I learn about. Since old habits die hard, I might even be an occasional news contributor to www.thedoorsguide.com.
I had a bunch of sappy stuff to say, but I was getting verbose and I decided it was out of character for me, so I hit the delete button. It was a hard decision to end this website, but I know the time is right for me. I do want to sincerely thank all of you who have been reading and contributing to this website since 2002. You all played an important part in making it such a success.
Finally, I want to thank Ray and Robby and John and Jim for the inspiration that continues to fuel this life-long dedication in me and in millions of fans worldwide.
